Procedure of Engage (I DO): Can you guess this animal? Put your finger on
your nose if you think you can figure it out. I like the cold. I swim
Lesson in the ocean, I waddle on the land, I eat fish, my colors are
black and white. What am I? (a penguin).
Explore: Think about a special animal you have been
researching. Think back to the books, websites, and videos you
have explored. Just like I gave clues about my animal I want you
to think of a few clues to share with your partner. See if your
partner can guess your animal.
Let the students explore thinking about facts to share and
sharing knowledge with a partner.
Explain: We have been learning a lot about animals these past
few weeks and many of us are becoming experts about a
special animal. We know what the animal looks like, where it
lives, and what it eats. Playing the mystery game is one way to
share information, but I have a very cool way we can present
our learning.
Elaborate (WE DO): Review first I can statement- I can identify
the main topic and key details in a story. Prompt students to
listen for details and think about what the story is all about. Show
Penguin video from You Tube. After the first viewing show again
stopping at several spots to let students TPS key details. At the
end of the second viewing discuss the main topic. Tell students
this special type of writing is call a digital story, write on a
vocabulary strip. Facilitate a discussion about the similarities and
differences between a digital story and print based text. After
students have had time to discuss and have shared that a
digital story doesnt have words address this misconception by
showing both story map and storyboard. Tell students our goal is
to make a digital story about an animal of their choice on the
iPads but the first step is mapping our main topic and key
details.
Evaluate (formative-YOU DO): Remind students about the game
we played at the beginning of the lesson and show my
completed story map as a model. Ask students to think of an
animal and three details or facts they know about the animal.
Review I can statement- I can prewrite to tell information about
an animal of my choice including main topic and key details.
Pass out Story map handout.
Close: How does the main topic and key detail fit together?
What is one thing you want to make sure you include in your
digital story? (picture, fact, etc.)
