PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION.

The books hither to published on inflexon of Nouns and

of Verbs, being defective in the arrangement of their
Conjugation
of the Sanskrit language have felt great
parts, many beginners
difficulty in mastering
them up. We have known many instances
in which the students have given up studying the Sanskrit lanuguage
in dispair. Besides labour, they had to spend, quite unnecessarily,
much of thier time in committing to their memory, pages after
pages treating of words of little or no importance,
To remove these difficulties and to make the subject as

simple and familiar as possible, the Author had taken much pains
in bringing out ibis work.

The following points have been kept in view:- Orthography:

Easy words of Ajantas and Halantas with new Sanskrit Texts and
Examples; different uses of cases, compound-words, and Conju-
gations of verbs.
As an appendix to help English students a glossary of gram-
matical terms is also given at the end.

MADRAS THE AUTHOR

November 1878

Preface to the Second Edition:

Sin;e the publication of the 1st

Edition, I have come to
understand that there are certain
passages in the first Edition of
MIS hooks thai are too difficult to be
easily comprehended by the
vaid~*m$; I have in the present Edition, worked out those difficult
topics iii
great detail
As thefirst Edition treats of
only a few verbs, the students
are times compelled to consult other
at
costly books, which are
not within the reach of
many a student. To obviate this difficulty,
roles have been laid down in this Edition, clearly pointing out the
mode of deriving the different forms in
the active Voice ) of
(
Dearly four hundred verbs.
An alphabatically arranged Index of all the words treated of
their English
equivalents has been, further added with a view to
facilitate reference to them
xm
In fact, this book has been carefully revised and a good deal
of new matter added to it. ;

I shall feel amply rewarded' for the labour I have bestwood on

this, if it serves the purpose of those for whom it is intended.
MADRAS, August, 1886. G. V. K.
Preface to the Third Edition.
The present Edtionis intended to supply a want greatly felt by
the student owing to the absence, in the first two Edtions, of the
different passive forms of verbs, to understand which be had to
refer to more costly works as Dhaturatnavali, &c. Besides the
Passive forms ^causals, Desiderivatives, Frequentatives, and
PARASMAIPADA-FREQENTATIVES have also been added a
few More examples of inflexion of nouns, of conjugation of verbs
and of special instances of Samasas and the whole of the Dhatu-
patha of Panini wiffi explanation.
As a help some of the original
to the free Sanskrit student
Sutras of Panini have also been added in addition to the explanati-
ons. The number of the diiferent roots ending in different termin-
ations has also been fixed. Under these circumstances, it is

unnecessary to say that this Edtion has been greatly enlarged.

In spite of the many improvements both in the matter and
get up of the work, a low price has been fixed so that it may be
within the reach of all.
MADRAS. G.-V.'K.
May 1892.
OPINION
The book called Sabdaratnavaliis a work on Sanskrit in-
flexion arid etymology, and contains much useful information for
students preparing for University Examinations. It treat of the
subjects according to the order of the Siddhanta Kaumudi, and
gives without mentioning the Sutras of Panini the most important
declensional forms of Nouns 3 Samasas, Taddbitas, and other
suffixes and forms of verbs. I hope therefore
the conjugations
that the author's well bestowed labours willmeet with suitable
encouragement from the stijdeDts of the Sanskrit Language.
