ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This work would not have been possible without the financial support of the
MR. Nirupam das.

I am grateful to all of those with whom I have had the pleasure to work during
this and other related projects. Each of the members has provided me
extensive personal and professional guidance and taught me a great deal
about project scanning. I would especially like to thank MR. Nirupam das (zonal
manager). As my teacher and mentor, he has taught me more than I could ever
give him credit for here. He has shown me, by his example, what a good
manager should be.

Nobody has been more important to me in the pursuit of this project than the
members of my family and my mentor MR. Supratim Pratihar I would like to
thank my parents, whose love and guidance are with me in whatever I pursue.
They are the ultimate role models. Most importantly, I wish to thank my loving
and supportive family who provide unending inspiration.

Moreover I am also in debt to Dr Prof k.k Beuria Advisor of IMIS Bhubaneswar

and my college mentor Mrs. Usha Kamila, IMIS Campus, Bhubaneswar for their
kind help and co-operation for completing this project work.

I indeed thanks to SOMANY CERAMICS, Kolkata and IMIS Bhubaneswar for giving
me opportunity to have experience in a professionally run organization.
PREFACE

Any kind of learning is incomplete till it is practically applied in the concerned

field. Only then does a person understand and get hold of even the minutest
details of what he/she has learnt in his stay at the institute doing his /her PDGM.
So, to practically apply what I had gained in the past one year in the PGDM
programme, I underwent two months summer training at Somany Ceramics
Limited, Kolkata.

It has been a wonderful learning experience, which has given me an insight into
Management of modern business which requires an appreciation of
multidisciplinary concept and in-depth knowledge of specific analytical tools,
geared to the solution of real life problems. No doubt every real situation is
unique but a set of theoretical tools of knowledge, itself based on empirical
foundation, can help in developing the mechanism for handling such situation.

So the PGDM curriculum has been desired to provide to the future managers
ample practical exposure to the business world.

The summer training is essential for the fulfilment of PGDM curriculum; it

provides an opportunity to the student to understand the industry with special
emphasis on the development of skills in analysing interpreting practical
problems through applications of management.

Tiles are basically divided into two categories which are:

Ceramics tiles

Vitrified tiles

Ceramics tiles are much cheaper than Vitrified tiles, hence they are less durable.
Ceramics tiles are basically burn bake (polish/glossy), which can be used in Indian
weathers too.

On other hand, vitrified tiles are more durable. In vitrified tiles moisture goes out by
some process from the tiles by which this tiles absorbs the water.
In vitrified tiles we have three sections:

Polished vitrified tiles (PVT)

Glashed vitrified tiles (GVT)
Unpolished tiles

Further PVT tiles are divided into 2 form which are:

Soluble salt
Double charged

In soluble salt tiles we have two types of tiles which are NANO and NON NANO.
NANO technology is the technology which helps the tiles from stains and gives extra
guard and protection on the top layer.

In double charged tiles extra colour is given to the tiles for glossy look.

GVT tiles are also divided into 2 categories:

POLISHED
UNPOLISHED

Beside this Somany has also its own patent product which is known as VEIL CRAFT
(VC).

It is the technology in which tiles are covered with transparent glass cover at top. It
is mainly used in malls, institutes, schools etc. it comes with scratch resistant.

Work done by me as an intern in Somany Ceramics

The work which I had get under guidance of MR. Nirupam das is to do the
project scanning in the Kolkata city. He had provided me data sheet of 213
locations of construction sites which I had visited in my internship. Among this
he has asked me to visit other areas also to the survey.
He had provided me various catalogues of Somany tiles with different
segments and variety of tiles with a verifying rate ranges for every kind of
construction sites.
The main target of my project was to do the survey of tiles preferring by
different builders and different segment of constructions those who prefer to
put tiles for their interiors.
In my survey, I had found out that most customers of tiles are excited about
wall tiles rather than floor tiles because its a new trend being followed by the
customers.
I had visited to many under constructed projects of flats, apartment, duplex
and simplex. I asked them that which kind of tiles they want to prefer and got
an answer from all premium segment projects those who prefer somany.
Basically my main work is to visit the government institutes, construction sites
and ask for their upcoming projects which they are going to construct. My
work is to approach them for Somany tiles if they are interested.

In terms of dcor solution with widest product selection categories- ceramic

sanitaryware and bath fittings as well as tile laying solution.

WEAKNESSES:
There is a scope of increasing foreign operations in the companys distribution
system.
Somany tiles is supposed to carry a very high brand equity with it, nut is should
do more advertising as people of tier 2 cities and lower are not aware of the
brand.
Somany tiles are priced a bit higher than normal brands in the category.

OPPURTUNITIES:
It can easily take leverage of its Indian leadership and expand its international
operational network.
Government policies in India are going to be pro manufacturing sector and
with FDI coming into the sector, this would help SOMANY tiles to grow.

THREATS:
Somany tiles does not face a tough competition from its competitors.
Many regional players are also taking on Somany tiles in term of price.
RECOMMENDATION & SUGGESTION

The tiles industry is huge and has huge potential for growth. The company
should try and revamp its operations, they should lower the price. It can be
done by increase production, achieve economies of scale and then increase
market penetration.

The product is doing reasonably well in most of the market. So they should
promote the product accordingly e.g. free sampling, discounts, prominent
hoardings & so more.

This will help in increasing the sales volume.

Quality improvement.
Increase in frequency of visits of marketing executives.
Reduction in delivery time.
Prices needed to have a check.
Free gifts, should be provided by the companies.
Availability of products should be improved.
Incentives for distributors should be improved.
