You are right, a lot of bad return with onduline or so.
In France we use some big panel in asphalt (or in bro ciment) but under roof tiles in terra cotta.
May be the shingles is a better solution in asphalt ( and cheap), because it can move , but I never use.

Conduction- the transfer of heat from matter to matter
Convection- the transfer of heat from matter to air
Radiation- the transfer of heat from one point to another, such as boiling water.

The foil uses convection to re ect heat back up into the attic.
