Course Overview
This is the second course in the Algebra sequence. Topics introduced in Algebra 1 are further developed and
expanded. These include: performing basic operations with real numbers and polynomials, solving
equations, inequalities, and systems of equations; and investigating both linear and quadratic equations. In
addition, several new topics (rational expressions, quadratic and logarithmic functions as well as complex
numbers) will be studied.

Materials
Notebook: A 3-ring binder for the exclusive use for Algebra 2 is required. It should be at least one inch
wide. You will need lined notebook paper as well.

Textbook: Textbooks are available to sign out as an extra resource.

Pencil: All math homework and tests should be completed in pencil.

Calculator: Students should have their own calculator to use in class and at home. Any basic function
calculator is acceptable. We recommend the Texas Instruments TI-30XIIs. No calculators will be provided.

Absences
While missing class is highly discouraged, students are permitted 3 excused absences throughout the course.
Students who have more than 3 excused absences may lose credit for the course. In the case of an absence,
a parent/guardian must email BOTH the teacher AND Mrs. Bennick, Assistant Principal for Curriculum and
Instruction, at bennickt@parklandsd.org. Please adhere to this procedure.

Also, as this is a full year course that has been condensed into 6 weeks, students are responsible for
completing any and all assignments missed due to absence the next day that they are in class. If an absence
results in a student missing an assessment, he/she will be required to makeup the missed assessment the next
day that he or she is in class.

NOTE: There will be no class on Monday, July 3rd Wednesday, July 5th in observance of the July 4th
Holiday. All Parkland schools and offices will be closed on these days as well.
Grading
Tests/Quizzes
Students will be notified in advance of the test or quiz date. The dates are listed on the class calendar and
will be announced in class. Furthermore, pop quizzes may be given without student notice. Point value will
vary.

Homework
Homework may be randomly checked and may be collected. Homework will be assigned daily and whether
it is checked or not, completing it an important part of your success in the course.

Online Assignments
IXL and Khan Academy Assignments will be given throughout the course.

Classwork
Assignments in class may be collected and graded at times. The point value will be announced during class.

Midterm Exam The midterm is worth 10% of the final grade.

Final Exam The final exam is worth 10% of the final grade.

FINAL GRADE
74% and below no credit for course (must retake Algebra 2)
75% and above student qualifies for Geometry CP or Geometry GHP
85% and above student qualifies for Honors Geometry (and will be required to complete the
necessary summer assignment for the first day of school at the high school with no
exception)
NOTE: Attendance and participation in this summer enrichment Algebra 2 GHP course does not guarantee
advancement to the next level. Advancement to the next course in the math sequence, Geometry, is
dependent upon the student's overall grade in this course.
