Manila Electric Company: MERALCO

STRENGTH:

Manila Electric Company or popularly known as MERALCO, is an electric

distribution utility. This companys number one strength is that it is the largest distributor
and the only electric power distributor that holds electric distribution in the 22 cities and
89 municipalities of Metro Manila. It is also involved in the industrial field, which includes
huge manufacturing companies, small establishments, streetlights, and even railroad
functions. The electric company is located at the G/F Lopez Bldg., MERALCO Center, Ortigas
Ave., Pasig City and has 5,969 employees and earning at least P121 billion (23 billion USD)
annually.

The company is owned by a prominent family, the Lopezs and shareholders coming
from several, top companies such as PLDT and Metro Pacific which has the largest share of
49.96% of it, followed by the JG Summit Holdings Inc., holding 27.12% to be exact, and
other companies, even the government holds some part of the MERALCO. From this
statement it only shows that the MERALCO has many financial resources that can sustain
the operation for as long as it exists, excluding those individuals who pay their bills almost
every single day.

Its Marketing skills wont matter that much, because since they are the largest
distributor of electricity, and they are quite known for generations they are confident
enough that no matter how expensive the billing that they will send to each houses or
establishments people would still pay them making their operations continue 24/7. In
short, they have the power and capability to demand the price.

As the leading electric distributor in the Philippines having thousands of customers,

they are faced with a great challenge of improving their customer service, workforce
productivity, and the overall operations. This challenge led them to a technology or system
in which they called TOMS which means Trouble Order Management System. The said
system functions as field service automation solution which enables workforce managers
to create order tickets and rapidly dispatch their maintenance crew for the immediate
response to customers requisitions or complaints. Through a Blackberry device, the field
engineers can receive assigned trouble tickets, respond to the order request, assess and
troubleshoot assets and provide real-time update of ticket status.
WEAKNESS:

As our population in the Philippines is fast growing, even with the technology
handled by MERALCO, it is still quite difficult to attend to all the customers needs and
complaints. The number of population and customers complaining are not proportioned to
the service vehicles provided by MERALCO causing delays to services.

Through these features offered by the SMART Communications, and since

most of the services offered by the SMART Communications having 55.4 Million
subscribers. They have also established a name that went on for years, making
them a reliable and credible source for communication.

The SMART company is wholly owned subsidiary of PLDT (Philippine Long
Distance Telephone Company) making its operation as private as possible. Their
annual sales range from 9million pesos to 10-million pesos.
SMART Communications has its weakness in terms of competition, there
are lots of private companies that establishes their own communication
company, due because to the spreading knowledge to individuals about
technology. Losing not just the opportunity but the customers as well.

Sometimes, their weakness as well is the lackness to attend to attend to

the needs of their customers, due to the signal that their company cant
sometimes provide because of the said other Communications company that
keeps on being competitive trying to improve their newly established
companies.
