I. Project Background
There are many techniques, skills,

and practices that can make a

teacher effective. In my opinion,

being an effective teacher means

allowing an environment that

enables students to learn in the

classroom to develop their best abilities. When effective teaching is practiced,

students develop their love for learning and gain new knowledge about what

they are studying. Effective teaching can stem from many different practices

and ideas such as attitude toward subject matter, implementing different

learning styles into lessons, and being passionate about the subject being

taught. All of these ideas can help a teacher become more effective in the

classroom. It is true that effective teaching also allows students to understand

better the new material and difficult content. Effective teaching takes time and

effort.
We, the students of University of Makati, taking NSTP 2 Literacy Training

Service (LTS) is requisite to take a service for 90 hours in a specific institution.

The place where we implement our action plan is at The Pottershand

progressive learning school. It is a school for preschools and elementary

students. The status of the community is that they have CCTV Camera for the

entire classroom to monitor the actions and activities of the students in and

outside of the school. They have contacts at the Barangay and at the Police

Station.

Map of Barangay Pembo

Demographic Profile

PEMBO was a military reservation and home of the elite AFP crack unit, the First Ranger

code-named "PANTHERS". The literal meaning of the word PEMBO is PANTHERS

ENLISTED MEN'S BARRIO. At first, only military personnel and their dependents were

allowed to reside in the barrio. However, as the year went by more and more military

dependents increased together with their civilian relatives and friends and reportedly

sucked in unnoticed, in search of homes in the barrio.

On January 7, 1986 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 2475 awaiting this portion

of the military reservation lots to the actual occupants and called the area as Barangay

Pembo. The said proclamation was amended to Proclamation No. 518 on January 31, 1990,
limiting the disposition of these lots to bonafide occupants only who were residing in the

proclaimed area on or before January 7,1986 to 50 square meters minimum and 300 square

Meters maximum per lot.

Barangay Pembo is so big, even bigger in land area than its neighboring Municipality of

Pateros and had a land area of 123 hectares and a population of 65,000 inhabitants based

on the 1995 population survey. As a result, in February 1996 City Ordinance No. 96-010,

an ordinance creating a new barangay. Barangay Rizal, part of Barangay Pembo,

principally authored by Councilor Astolfo C. Pimentel and co-authored by the late Vice

Mayor Arturo S. Yabut and all members of the Sangguniang Panglunsod ng Makati, the

ordinance was enacted and approved.

Currently, the barangay has 14 sitios covering an area of 61 hectares and approximately

has a total population of 38,332. The barangay accommodates the newly-built and

transferred 6-storey Ospital ng Makati to provide the Makati residents with the highest

quality and state of the art health facilities and health care

services.(https://www.facebook.com/Pembo-Makati-City-Philippines-

III. Project Impact

A. Socioeconomic Impacts:

Being a student-teacher means making several decisions concerning planning for

instruction, developing teaching strategies, and evaluating outcomes of lesson plans. After

a lesson is taught, it is crucial to make note if any changes are necessary for next time. If

the lesson was successful, the teacher will know to keep using that strategy in the

future. One of the main steps to becoming an effective teacher is to gain intimate

knowledge toward the subject matter that will be taught in the classroom. An effective

teacher must demonstrate an understanding of the education context. In other words, an

effective teacher should be able to show that he or she is knowledgeable in the subject that

is being taught. Another way to help students in the learning process is to make the content

meaningful. For this to take place the teacher understands the central concepts, tools of

inquiry, and structures of the discipline he or she teachers and creates learning experiences

that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students. Some of us are taking

the field of Education and someday we will be future educators of the next generation. As

we go along in our duties as student teachers we have been experiencing this kind of

conditions.

We have been encouraged every students to practice themselves to read more to be able to

enhance their reading skills.

They are been motivated by the teachers and classmates to develop their skills when it

comes to their hidden talents.

Through the story telling that has been shared by the group we let them realize the

importance of adapting the right environment.

Through the reading text that had been given by the teachers we calculate their

comprehension skills in reading.

B. Environmental Impacts:

A classroom can be set up in a way that stifles creativity or does not promote a positive

learning environment. There are many things that can affect this environment. There are

physical elements such as wall art, arrangement of desks, or resources. Also, there are

intangible elements such as the energy of the classroom, the rules, or the sounds within the

room. Each of these can impact a students focus and achievement in the class. They can

also affect a teachers attitude in the class. Included in each of these elements of the

classroom is the emotional environment. The way in which a teacher organizes their class,

or how they control it, will yield positive or negative consequences for their students. If a

teacher is unmotivated or negative there will be a direct impact on the students within the

classroom. Similarly, if a teacher is motivated and positive they will likely have a beneficial

impact on their students as well. It is important for a teacher to understand this cause and

effect in order to understand how to organize their classroom to create a better learning
C. Institutional Impacts
Some institutions offers some sort of workplace volunteer program, which allows us to

volunteer for certain amount of hours per month that are approved during work hours. Why

dont we use the time to benefit our community? So lets take this as an advantage, Invite

institutional members and friends to partake in a group activities during work hours. Impact

issues have also surface in relation to perceived deficiencies in school monitoring and

evaluation of the effects of professional development. Experiencing a lot of effort in this

institution is quite difficult for us. As you go along with different behaviors of a children

the noise, moods, their skills give me some challenges in order for me to learn more. In our

institution I might say it is great even though we have been experiencing favoritism

between the group. Its still okay for us. We have also learn the effectiveness when it comes

in teaching in school. Effective teaching depends on if different learning styles are

implemented into lesson plans. It is important us to realize that not every student learns in

the same way. Some students may be better visual learners while others are better at hands

on activities. Incorporating different learning styles will let each student have the ability

to learn in a way that comes most natural to them.

D. Other Impacts:

One thing we should do is participating in community service allow students to build upon

their existing skills sets. In volunteering students they protects, explore and improve upon

existing skills. Students can explore potential careers and find out what they need to

develop in order to work in the field. When it comes to effective teaching, there are many

techniques that can better a teachers ability to enable students to learn. As anyone can

tell, becoming an effective teacher is not easy. It takes a lot of planning, patience, and hard

work. However, no matter how much work it takes, I believe that taking these necessary

steps are crucial to my success as a teacher. Changing the lives of students, providing them

with new knowledge, and giving them the materials necessary to help lead a bright future

is my priority. If this means doing anything that is in my control to become an effective

teacher, then I will strive to do just that.

IV. Implementation Strategy

through story telling.
Monitoring and To evaluate and Based on the
Evaluation monitor the progress attendance Every
of the reading and Tuesday, Wednesday
comprehension skills and Friday
of the student.

As we go through along in our action plan, the above shows the summary of our

implementation: Our implementation was located at Ilang-Ilang St. Pembo Makati City.

The first day of our implementation we came up with the presenting of our action plan to

the teachers and they will be the one to orient the parents with regards of our proposal in

the new regulator of their children. The resources we had made is the letter coming from

our university and the confirmation of the barangay chairman of barangay Pembo. It was

dated last November. Teachers not only have to deal with students on a daily basis, but

along with the proper student-teacher relationship, they have to interact with parents and

extended families. In some cases parents or guardians can be as challenging as the students.

Teachers have to be actively involved in partnership with the parents in order to improve

the educational system and maintain high standards for their students education. They can

also act as effective agents in creating a cooperative community by encouraging parents to

see that they can experience the rewards and benefits of teaching too.
The main implementation of our plan is to improve the reading and comprehension skills

of the students through story telling. We have conducted this every Tuesday, Wednesday

and Friday. We have preparing for our visuals, The books, props, flash cards etc. to be able

to measure the understanding of the children when it comes in listening. A real teacher is

not one who can simply impart information but along with it he or she must be able to

influence and make a difference to the lives of children.

The main goal to achieve this action plan is through to our Monitoring and Evaluation. In

this stage the main objectives is to evaluate the monitor the progress of the reading and

comprehension skills of the students. We conduct a post test. Aside from that, the teachers

in our institution come up to have a portfolio for our remembrance while in there school.

It is quite fun to achieve the said plan to be able to calculate the skills of the children. But

the sad part is that you have to leave them very fast. Time run so fast. You be able to love

the children, you have been shared the joy the feeling of selfless love. Saying I love you

Teacher. It is quite amazing having this kind of deployment. Aside from those struggles

you have to face. You will also experience the joy and love they give. Appreciating the

stories, is a great gift to us and in that way we know that we are not there just to share

stories but to give lessons. We have build relationships and learning environment on their

own and since teaching and learning are very personal efforts, the classroom becomes a

home-away-from-home to a greater extent as compared to many other professional

environments. Finally, this implementation is the main strategy to accomplish the plan is

just focus of what is in the action plan.

V. Community/Barangay Institution Initiatives

The Pottershand Progressive Learning School, with the help of Design Center for Nation

Building, assist and help us throughout this project and also participated by Barangay

Official. This Project aims for the benefits of the constituents the Design Center for

Nation Building make a request letter for the permission to deploy us in different

institution located in Pembo Makati City. The institution we have been encounter is quite

constricted, It only shows that it is limited for a number of students only.

VI. Implementation Problems

Policy Problem

Teachers often complains about teaching a large number classes. These unlucky

teachers does not only suffer from the pedagogical shortcomings of large classes, but

also from the stress these classes produce. It is difficult to set a definition of what a

large class is. One of the main difficulties that a teacher may experience while teaching

a large class is the tremendous effort that she or he will have to make. With an out

numbered class there is always something to be done. With a large class, it is difficult

to get a satisfactory knowledge of students needs. Intimacy with students

and remembering names might be a problem, sometimes teachers remember their

students by face and attitudes. As a consequence of the large number of students, the

noise level is inevitably high which adds to the stress teachers may experience. And

the difficulty of giving the knowledge and information to the students because of the

noise that the classroom is making. Organizing, planning and presenting lessons, may
constitute another challenge for teachers in such classes as students abilities might

differ considerably. It is also a challenge to a teacher to give a focus to his/her students.

He/she cannot give his/her full time to the students, because teachers is not just teacher

but also a parent or child to their family that has also obligation to them.

There is another difficulty related to the learning process. In fact, engaging learners

actively in the learning process may not be easy in a crowded class. Its also hard to

do physical activities in a crowded place, we all know that physical activity is also

needed to the students to have a cheerful discourse in a classroom.

It is hard to imagine how a large class would benefit from school resources such as

computers, books, references

The more crowded class, the more we need books but its one of the major problem

that the government cannot still give solutions.

With a crowded classroom, teachers might find it difficult to measure effectiveness

and the need of their students.

A large classes gives reluctant students a place to hide.

Technical Problem

Challenges faced we might respond, and how to look on the bright side of a very

common situation. At the same time, it might encourage students to take greater

responsibility for their own learning. One way to reduce the noise level in the

classroom might be to establish a code of behaviour that is created by teachers and

learners together. The idea is that if students are involved in the writing of ground

rules, they are more likely to observe them. Ask students to suggest ground rules for
reducing noise level, for example

-if you finish your lesson task, read a book;

- talk softly without disturbing others during group work;

- raise your hand before sharing something with the class;

You can also decide on sanctions if the rules are broken together with your students.

You might want to display the rules and sanctions on the classroom wall and remind

students of them from time to time.

Financial Problem

No money no talk. People always mentioned this word in their life. Do you think money

is important in our life besides food, shelter and love? If you think so, then why we need

it? Financial problem also happened among students especially when they live far

regarding their On the job training institution from their houses. Students always complaint

about sort of money. With regards of the financial problems, we have problems in

transportation fee because the school, the OJT Institution is quite far from our houses.

Spending a non-necessary things or overspend and living away from their family are the

causes of financial problems among us. Poor financial management is the main cause

students are facing financial problem.

Organizational Problem

Finding a school who will accept O.J.T students and allow implementation of

the proposed plan - Some schools that we have asked for permission did not

entertain our request, for they have their own policy with regards of accepting

O.J.T. Students. The big number of the O.J.T students became an issue upon

applying for admission to various schools - Leaving the school administrators

to deny our request to enter and conduct the said program, for they cannot

accommodate the huge number of students. Lack of time to comply with the

required or targeted number of hours to accumulate for the O.J.T. Program -

Because of the many school/university activities that we also need to attend,

our O.J.T. and other miscellaneous regarding NSTP went head to head with

our academics in terms of time. Thus, there's a possibility that we might not

reach the targeted number of accumulated hours.

Favoritism in schools, is one of the issues that sticks out in my mind. Discrimination is the

process in which two stimuli differing in some aspect are treated differently, and favoritism

is the showing of being partial to. This type of discrimination could range from how their

disciplined if they get into trouble compared to others. And yes the problem we have

encountered is the favoritism of the teachers. Each one of us felt envy, we think that we

have done much work more than them. The faculty had a great state of company by them

but when it comes to us it becomes more serious.

Building a positive relationship between the teacher and students helps students become

more successful and have more motivation. Favoritism is the inclination to favor some

person or group not for their abilities but for some irrelevant factor such as a characteristic

they possess .or their personal contacts. or merely out of personal preferences It destroys

equality as it brings certain advantages to people who did not earn them and it also hurts

others' good intentions

VII. Recommendations

As we finished our community service at T.H.E Pottershand Progressive

Learning School, we noticed that our professor did not even visited us, not even

once.

As a teacher we should be aware of our students activities. We need to be hands

on when it comes to teaching. As we implement the Outcomes Based Education

Program to our students, as well as the teacher.

A. Review of current program or policy

Crowded space for the students and school facilities.

Some of their equipment are ill-maintained.

They have different strategies and approaches to the students with different attitude

and personality regarding studying and listening.

B. Provisions for technical assistance

Having the necessary training with regards of the new innovations in technology

to help the institution in creating and being conventional with the activities done.
C. Funding Assistance

Proper budgeting of the schools fund to be able to buy and assess the needed

resources for the school.

E.Strengthening of Institution Management Capability

Proper means of information-dissemination to the students parents.

Recruitment of additional manpower for security of their safety and

assistance for student handling.
