1. Common Core Learning Standard(s) Addressed:
-Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their
actions contribute to the sequence of events.
-By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry,
at the high end of the grades 23 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
-Introduce the topic or text they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an
organizational structure that lists reasons.

2. Learning Target(s): (What will students know & be able to do because of this lesson?)
This lesson is to help develop reading, writing, and cognitive skills while having fun.

3. Relevance/Rationale: (Why are the outcomes of this lesson important in the real world? Why
are these out comes essential for future learning?)
Reading, writing, and cognitive skills are essential for everyday living and future schooling.
Being about to know how to read and know what you are reading are important.

4. Formative Assessment Criteria for Success: (How will you & your students know if they have
successfully met the outcomes? What specific criteria will be met in a successful
product/process? What does success on this lessons outcomes look like?)
Students will be told what is expected from them before and during the lesson. Expectations
will also be visually written for all students to see. Each pupil is expected to participate in
reading and write a paragraph about what chapters one and two of The Chocolate Touch are
about with one of the sentences representing their opinion of the story so far.

5. Activities/Tasks: (What learning experiences will students engage in? How will you use these
learning experiences or their student products as formative assessment opportunities?)
In class the teacher and some students will read the first chapter of The Chocolate Touch out
loud as a whole. Next students will be put into small groups to read the second chapter
together. Lastly students will individually draw a picture or two and write a paragraph below it
to demonstrate what the first two chapters were about.

books, paper, pencils, crayons, markers

appropriately in this lesson? Consider all aspects of student diversity.)
Reading material will be searched for stereotypes or misrepresented cultures. Each student will
need their own book.
8. Modifications/Accommodations: (What curriculum modifications and/or classroom
accommodations will you make for Students with Disabilities in your class? Be as specific as
possible.)
If a student is blind, a braille or audio copy will be needed. Some students might need extra
time for reading or writing.
