Social Skills Assessment and Intervention Assignment

Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment was to use one of the case studies provided, to interpret and

analyze direct observation data and discrepancy analysis along with the rating scale findings for

the case study, to identify target social skills. Based on the findings, I described an intervention

plan for facilitating improved social performance for the case study. My intervention plan

included explicit instructional methods, social skill prompting and coaching methods, social

understanding and social problem-solving methods, peer-mediated strategies, and finally to

provide and evaluation plan for the intervention. Bobby Gibson was the case study used for this

assignment.

How you addressed the assignment requirements (if relevant)

First, I thoroughly read through Bobby Gibsons case study. I began by describing who Bobby

was, what he was struggling with, and then what I identified as points I wanted to address in

this assignment. Secondly, I came up with an intervention plan that I believed would benefit

Bobby. I gave the time line eight weeks to begin with, with a daily check in process for

monitoring purposes. I wanted to provide an opportunity for Bobby to be able to self-monitor

his progress, but also provide an opportunity for staff to monitor and adjust his plan as needed.

The final thing I did was provide some suggestions for alternatives to Bobbys intervention in

case the original time-line wasnt sufficient.

Why you chose to revise (if you did)

There was no revision needed for this assignment.

What you learned from this assignment and its contribution to your development as a special

educator.

My take away from this assignment came from the feedback provided. Not realizing that

sometimes the wording on an intervention can have such a big impact on the outcomes. I have

a bad habit of writing my interpretation of what the student is struggling with. Instead of

saying, it seemed as if Bobby was struggling with I need to be more specific and say, while

talking with his peers, Bobbys inappropriate responses cause conflict.

Some questions to keep in mind for future, directly from feedback are, How will you

determine need to make changes to the intervention? How will you determine success? What

are the next steps? How will teacher check fidelity of the data? What will the data look like?

Will the student be involved in data collection? How is this generalized across subjects?
