Algebra 2 College Prep

Welcome to Algebra 2. In this course there will be an emphasis on functions including linear,
quadratic, polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions. Students will be graphing and solving
linear and non-linear equations, as well as solving problems. The goal is to prepare students for Pre-
Calculus or a college level math class.

SUPPLIES

The following are required every day:

Notebook (graph ruled recommended)
Loose leaf graph paper
Pencils
A graphing calculator for use at home
(Recommended to purchase a TI-84 graphing calculator)

CLASSROOM RITUALS

1. Check daily agenda.

The topics covered will be posted along with the state standards that are being
addressed in that lesson.
2. Gather materials needed.
Graphing calculators will be available. Other materials will be provided as needed for
specific lessons.
3. Have homework on your desk.
Homework must be on your desk and ready to be collected at the beginning of the
class period in order to count for credit.
4. Begin warm-up immediately.
Warm-up activities will be posted daily and students are expected to begin these
activities without being asked.
5. Try your best.
Every day you are expected to put forth your best effort in class and on
homework assignments.

CLASSROOM ROUTINES

Warm-Up 5 10 minutes Students complete activity posted independently.

Teacher is taking attendance and collecting homework.
Opening 5 10 minutes Students are taking notes and asking clarifying questions.
Teacher is explaining the lesson and/or provides information
needed to compete work time assignment.
Work Time 15 30 minutes Students work independently or in small groups to complete
activities related to the current standard and objective.
Teacher monitors progress and adjusts instruction as needed.
Closing 10 15 minutes Students complete activity and/or participate in discussion to
ensure they have understood the lesson.
Teacher leads activity/discussion or exit ticket to assess student
understanding of the lesson.
GRADING SCALE

The grading scale for all secondary schools in William Penn School District is as follows:

90 100 A
80 89 B
70 79 C
60 69 D
50 59 F

MARKING PERIOD GRADES

Quarter grades will include the following types of assignments:

Classwork 25%
To earn credit for warm-up each day students must:
o Begin warm-up as soon as they enter the class room
o Attempt the problem or explain why (in writing) they are struggling
To earn credit for opening each day students must:
o Take all notes
o Attempt the practice problem(s) given
To earn credit for work time each day students must:
o Complete all independent class work assignments
o Exude positive and respectful behavior throughout the entire class period
To earn credit for closing each day students must:
o Attempt the problem(s) and/or explain why (in writing) they are struggling

Homework 25%
Homework will be assigned most nights.
Homework will be collected and spot checked (worth 4 points) using the grading rubric below:
4 Attempted to complete all problems showing all work step by step
3 Attempted to complete most problems showing some work
2 Attempted to complete half of the problems; little work shown
1 Attempted to complete a few problems; No work shown
0 No attempt made on any problems

Tests and Quizzes 30%

Each test will consist of approximately 15-20 multiple choice questions, and 1-2 constructed
response questions.
Each quiz will consist of 5-10 open ended questions.
Students will be expected to complete test and quiz corrections in order to ensure they have
learned the given topic/met the standard and will have the opportunity to earn back half of
the points lost during the first administration of the test.
o Test corrections must be completed after school.
o Students will be given approximately one week to complete the test corrections.

Quarterly Assessments 20%

At the end of each quarter, you will be assessed on all material taught in that quarter only.
These grades will be worth 20% of the quarter grade.
