Specific Achievements :

Specific Recommendations for farmers

Recommended Chemical Control of Camel Thorn (Javacia) - the most widespread and
troublesome weed of the Bhal region.
Recommended that Farmers of Bhal and Coastal Zone should contingent plan for cotton in
normal monsoon and fodder sorghum under delayed monsoon for better returns.
Recommended that Farmers of middle Gujarat agro- climatic ZoneIII, growing Kharif
groundnut are advised to sow crop on onset of monsoon to fetch average 15% higher yield than
15 days delayed sowing and give Irrigation at moisture stress at 50 % depletion of soil moisture
to get 23% more yield than rainfed.
Specific research
Agro-climatic characterization:
Rainfall variability, water balance studies, assessment of climate change, dry spell variability,
extreme events of temp. and rainfall and rainfall probabilities have been studied.
Crop weather relationships:
Groundnut:
Weather, moisture sensitive phase and heat unit requirement of groundnut cv. Robut 33-1 and
GG-2 have been identified.
Weather based yield prediction model has been developed with R 2 of 0.58 to 0.92.
Wheat
Moisture, weather sensitive phase and heat unit requirement of wheat cv. GW-496 have been
identified.
Weather based yield prediction model was developed with R 2 of 0.67 to 0.97 and validated for
five consecutive years with av. error of 11 %.
Minimum temperature is found most effective and influencing weather parameter in wheat seed
yield.
It is evident from the regression model (Y= 12014.11-432.373 Tmin (Jan)-206.133 Tmin
(Dec), R2 : 0.90 that the increase in the minimum temperature during January by 1 0C there
is reduction in yield by 432 kg/ha , while increase in minimum temperature by 1 0C during
December reduces the yield by 206 kg/ha in 15 th November sown crop. Thus, higher
minimum temperature during January is not desirable for the wheat crop.
Growing degree days (GDD) requirement for wheat crop were found 1815 57.
CERES-wheat model of DSSAT family validated for Anand condition on wheat (cv. GW-
496, GW-366 and GW-322) yield, satisfactory and calibrated its new genetic co efficient.
Pest-disease weather relationship
Mustard:
Stem rot, rust and saw fly forecasting model of mustard have been developed with R 2 of 0.78 ,
0.96 and 0.71 respectively.
Optimum sowing (10th Oct.) with minimum infestation of aphids with higher grain yield of
mustard have been identified.
Okra:
YVM, macrophomina blight and jassids forecasting model habe been developed for okra with R2
of 0.54 to 0.87.

Computer Awareness : CCC, CCC+, Basics, M S Office, GIS application, Crop Modeling

The farmers of Bhal and Coastal Agro-c1imatic Zone are advised to fertilize safflower (variety A-
lor Bhima) with 25 kg N/ha. Safflower did not respond to applied phosphorus.
6. Time of sowing for Cotton (1997)
The farmers of Bhal and Coastal Zone should sow the cotton crop at the onset of monsoon but
not later than first week of August.
7. Irrigation x Fertilizer study in mustard (1997)
The farmers of Bhal and Coastal Agro-c1imatic Zone are advised to fertilize mustard with 60 kg
N/ha for obtaining economic yield under conserved moisture conditions. In case of harvested rain
water availability crop should be irrigated at 30 DAS with 50 mm of water and fertilize with 60 kg
N + 20 kg P205/ha.
8. Crop geometry for mustard (1999)
The farmers of Bhal and Coastal Zone are advised to grow mustard at a crop geometry of 75 cm
x 15 cm or 90 cm x 15 cm.
