I was a basketball coach for 3 years for Norman County East, 1 year for Hutchinson High School, and 1 year for Mound-Westonka. For
Norman County East I coached junior high boys in 2009, 9th grade boys in 2010, and junior varsity girls in 2011. I coached 9th grade boys
in 2012 for Hutchinson and junior varsity girls basketball for Mound-Westonka in 2014. All five years my teams were successful in
developing fundamentals, sportsmanship, and game management. I am also a basketball referee and have been certified through the
MSHSL for 7 years (8 years officiating experience).
I also have a passion for golf. I played golf through high school (All-Conference, 2008) and for two years at Concordia College in
Moorhead, MN. I also was a volunteer assistant coach for the Hawley High School boys golf program for the 2005, 2006, and 2009

1. Describe the skills or attributes you believe are necessary to be an outstanding teacher.
I believe the driving force behind an outstanding teacher is his or her passion for what they teach. Having a passion for teaching
involves continuing to learn and grow as a professional, which leads to a person becoming more efficient and effective. It also shows
students that a person never stops learning; which can be a motivation to many students.
I believe having good classroom management skills is extremely important. Knowing how to work with the different learning styles of
students, maintaining an organized classroom, good use of transition time, being flexible, and creating an environment that is fun to
learn in is what helps make students successful.
Having a vast amount of knowledge in the content you are teaching is also a necessary attribute of an outstanding teacher. If the teacher
of the class doesnt have confidence or mastery in the material being taught, or stumbles with the questions students ask, the teacher will
lose the respect of the students in the class. This includes a good understanding of the purpose for learning a specific objective.
Finally, ability to connect with and relate to students is probably the most important attribute of an outstanding teacher. Students are all
unique, and come from unique cultural backgrounds. Teachers that reach out to students as individuals, and get to know what makes the
students unique, can create that environment of trust that students want to learn in.
2. How would you address a wide range of skills and abilities in your classroom?
To best meet the needs of my students, I must begin by getting to know them. This process begins prior to the school year, by breaking
down data to learn about their level of understanding for different content, specifically reading and math. Then, once the school year
begins, getting to know the students interests and family background will give me enough knowledge to build a professional relationship
with each student. Once a relationship has been built, I can begin to understand the students learning needs, and meet them at their level
with engaging information.
Rotating through different techniques such as effective questioning, SMART Board activities, activities with technology, activities with
manipulatives, and direct instruction, will bring about change during the class. This helps refocus the students, and reach the different
learning styles in the classroom. Most importantly, I treat each student as an individual and work with them in setting and achieving
goals for my class. Then, I meet with students before, during, and after school to ensure that they are meeting their goals and making
progress.

I am applying for the mathematics position for Shakopee Schools. I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in
Mathematics Education, and a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership. With eight successful
years teaching math in grades 7-12, I am confident my skills will be a great asset to your team.
In my eight years of teaching, I have taught all math courses offered in grades 7-12. I believe all
students can learn, and build professional relationships with students to make sure I know how to best
meet their needs. After getting to know my students, I can then use instructional technology to
personalize their learning. In my career, I have used iPads and Chromebooks to engage students in
learning. At Becker High School, I made use of the 1:1 iPad initiative by effectively implementing a
flipped model classroom. At Becker High School and New Century Academy, I have used student
response apps to gather data to adapt instruction, and Geogebra and Desmos apps to engage students in
investigative learning to deepen understanding. I make use of these tools, along with teacher-led
instruction, to provide the best learning opportunities for the diverse learners in my classes.
Since leaving Norman County East to take a position closer to my wife, budget reductions provided me
the opportunity to gain experience in many different schools, both teaching and coaching. In each
school, I have proven the ability to adapt quickly and make a positive impact on the learning
environment. Attached you will find my rsum highlighting additional experiences that I believe will
help me continue to be successful as a math teacher. Thank you for your time and consideration, I look
forward to speaking with you.

1. Describe the skills or attributes you believe are necessary to be an outstanding teacher.
I believe an outstanding teacher needs to love what they do. The hours are long, the work is sometimes very difficult and emotionally
draining, and the job is one of the most important jobs anyone ever shoulders. You must have a passion for teaching.
Teaching is not a job that you leave at the office. An outstanding teacher will touch many lives in a positive and caring way and most of
the time this skill is not found in the carefully developed lesson plan. While knowledge of your discipline and delivery of the subject for
very diverse classes, are necessary attributes, it will not happen if your students do not think you believe in them.
Outstanding teachers inspire their students. Their students are personally invested in the lessons. Students know that their hard work
will be recognized and rewarded. Everyone is a learner in the outstanding teachers classroom. The jock is not working hard because
his/her grade has to be there to continue on the team. The special education student is not afraid to raise his/her hand with a question or
answer. The gifted and talented student is not challenging the teachers effort. Everyone is a learner, learning in their own individual
way and for their own personal reasons because they have been inspired.
The outstanding teacher believes that all of the students in his/her classroom can benefit from the lesson he/she presents. That belief,
that love of teaching, is a skill and an attribute that is inherent of an outstanding teacher.
2. How would you address a wide range of skills and abilities in your classroom?
I would address a wide range of skills in my classroom by first knowing my students. I like to get to know my students interests,
personal qualities, personal situations, and even if they are right or left handed. I immediately identify my ESL students and special
education students IEPs and math modifications when I receive class lists. I also will have identified my rules and discipline standards
early on so that all students in the class have a clear perception of the expectations.
Prior to presenting a new lesson or topic, I will have pre-assessed the students on the prerequisite skills for the lesson. In conjunction
2. How would you address a wide range of skills and abilities in your classroom?
with knowing my students, I like to have a seating plan that groups multiple intelligence levels for cooperative learning to succeed.
I would present students with the goals and objectives of the lesson. By having objectives, learners of varying skills will find it easier to
know when, or if, they are ready for the next step.
Content of the lesson would be the same for all students, but presented in varying degrees to adapt to each of the diverse learners.
Although math is a very detail-oriented discipline, I feel it is better to focus on the specific concepts of each lesson. It is also important
in this subject area for students to understand the concepts and not just memorize steps. I would support lessons with time management
so that mastery can be achieved, but curriculum is still moving and offer additional remediation before/after school. I would continually
assess during a lesson by asking questions, moving about the room, addressing concerns, and above all, being flexible. Unfortunately,
sometimes when your best lessons are not working, you have to drop back and punt! Experience has taught me that lessons that are good
with one class are not always good with another. I am very willing to adapt and change a lesson midstream in order to benefit the wide
range of skills in my classroom.

I am very excited to apply for the mathematics teaching position. I believe that my extensive experience, enthusiastic
attitude, and passion for teaching would be a great addition to any faculty.
I love to teach and I feel it is my calling in life. I taught high school mathematics from 1999 to 2006 in Maryland and held a
Highly Qualified Secondary Certificate. I prepared and interviewed for department chairperson prior to my decision to
move. I married and moved from Maryland to Lakeville, Minnesota in July 2006 and began working in a part-time position
tutoring and teaching area students, as well as providing private tutoring in my home while obtaining my Minnesota
licensure. I have taught in a long-term math substitute position, covering maternity leaves for six weeks at Apple Valley
High School and Faribault High School, taught summer school geometry for Farmington High School, and most recently
taught under contract, full time with Chaska High School. Unfortunately, I and several other non-tenured teachers are
being laid off due to a schedule change and district budget cuts. I have one year toward my Minnesota tenure and wish to
continue teaching full time to reach that goal.
I like to inspire and foster self-esteem and self-confidence in a subject area that very often causes apprehension. I have
instructed classes of all ages, including my educating peers. I enjoy the challenge that high school students represent as
they evolve and mature into a contributing adult in society. I would be supportive of the extra-curricular activities, as I feel
that being involved outside the classroom fosters interpersonal relationships with students, parents, and faculty.
I have over 30 graduate credits and plan to begin graduate courses in Education Administration as a masters program. I
aspire to apply for National Board Certification after securing a new teaching position.
I find my teaching career incredibly satisfying. I would very much like the opportunity to continue teaching mathematics. I
would like the opportunity to discuss the qualities and experience that makes me a quality candidate for the math position.
I can be reached during my prep from 11:30am to 1:15pm at 952-556-1445. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank
you for your time and consideration.

I recently noticed a mathematics teaching position on the Shakopee Schools web site. You may
recall that I taught for Kristi Hansons maternity leave in 2010. I enjoyed my time at Shakopee
High School more than any other long term substitution. We discussed the many reasons for this
during my time there. I was welcomed by your administration, staff, and students with open
arms and made several great new friendships. The math department helped me to ease into the
job quickly and made me feel like an integral part of the team, even though my job was
temporary. I feel that this previous experience makes me an excellent candidate for this
position.
As you will see from the enclosed resume, I have more than 10 years of experience in teaching
math. I love to teach and I feel it is my calling in life. The economy has devastated the
education system and has led to my being laid off in two different districts. I enjoy the challenge
that high school students represent as they evolve and mature into a contributing adult in
society. I would very much like to find a home for teaching and from the parent conferences to
the football games, Shakopee felt like a great fit last year. The Shakopee community was a
favorite for me even before I moved to Minnesota in 2006.
If you have questions, or if you want to schedule an interview, please contact me at either phone
or email provided above. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your time and
consideration.
Sincerely,
Heidi L S Severson

I am very excited to apply for the mathematics teaching position. I believe that my extensive experience,
enthusiastic attitude, and passion for teaching would be a great addition to your faculty. I have taught in
the Shakopee High School mathematics department previously as a long-term substitute for the co-chair,
Kristi Hanson and for Erica Lang as a summer school teacher.
I love to teach and I feel it is my calling in life. I very much enjoyed my time at your high school and with
the students of Shakopee. After teaching Geometry in summer school of 2011, I was unable to find a
teaching position. I have worked out of education for several years while staying current with math
education through periodicals and tutoring part-time. I tutored full time this spring from February to
present in my home, both college and high school level classes.
The classroom has been missed very much and I was delighted to hear of the opening from Kristi
Hanson! I like to inspire and foster self-esteem and self-confidence in a subject area that very often
causes apprehension. I have instructed classes of all ages, including my educating peers. I enjoy the
challenge that high school students represent as they evolve and mature into a contributing adult in
society. I would be supportive of your extra-curricular activities and community involvement, as I feel that
being involved outside the classroom fosters interpersonal relationships with students, parents, and
faculty.
Completion of the online application was done with haste as soon as the position was posted. I am able
to update the recommendations and supply any further information, as needed.
A teaching career is incredibly satisfying. The opportunity to teach mathematics for Shakopee High
School again would be much appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time
and consideration.
Sincerely,
Ms. Severson is an accomplished and experienced teacher who was hired to a full-time
position in the mathematics department due to increased enrollment.
As a member of our department, Ms. Severson has had the opportunity and the challenge
to teach high-level, secondary mathematics courses. To complement her ability to teach
rigorous secondary courses, she also teaches in our after school tutoring program that to
works with our most underachieving math students.
Ms. Severson brings a wealth of leadership experience to the department and is very
engaged within the department, actively participating on various committees and
discussions.
Ms. Severson thoroughly prepares herself to be successful in and out of the classroom.
Her apt skills of teamwork, follow-through, and instructional ability are easily
transferable into any situation and help Ms. Severson succeed at any undertaking at
Chaska High Schoolmathematical or otherwise.
Ms. Seversons strengths and abilities have been welcomed by the mathematics
department. I also believe these same traits will be the key to her success as she pursues
her future goals.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Stone

To whom it may concern,
This is to most highly recommend Mrs. Heidi Severson for a high school mathematics
teacher position in your school system. I was Heidis supervisor for five years and
observed her teaching on numerous occasions. She is an excellent teacher in all aspects.
She plans thoughtfully and thoroughly. She has a very positive outlook and students
know that she cares about them as individuals. She is highly knowledgeable of
mathematics content and understands how students learn. She is flexible and varies
instruction based on the needs of her students. Heidi also has a great teaching
personality. She is energetic and enthusiastic and displays a keen sense of humor. There
are few math teachers that demonstrate all of the above traits.
Mrs. Severson also has excellent initiative and leadership skills. She served on several
county curriculum development writing teams and attended several National conferences
in math education and technology education. She was certified as a graphing calculator
trainer and made several district wide professional development presentations. In
addition, Heidi made several presentations to prospective math teachers at McDaniel
College.
Mrs. Severson will do a superior job for you. Please feel free to contact me at
410-848-2441 for further information.

It is with pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for Heidi Severson. Presently, Heidi teaches
Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry at Chaska High School.
Heidi has established herself as a dedicated and caring professional committed to meeting her students
needs. She is enthusiastic about teaching and demonstrates compassion when dealing with students.
Heidi has done an excellent job of becoming an active member of Chaska High School. She has taken the
challenge of a new teacher in the department and seems like a seasoned veteran. She has also worked hard
to strengthen our mathematics program. For instance, Heidi has taken a strong initiative to be a leader within
the department and her opinion has been valued.
Heidi is a steady, achieving, and proud math teacher. We do not want to see her leave Chaska High School,
but we are currently converting our academic schedule from the block to the seven period day schedule.
Thus, we will be reducing FTEs in mathematics. Unfortunately, she may fall into that category as a non-
tenured math teacher.
Heidi is a talented, responsible, and dedicated individual who will make a positive addition to any school.
Sincerely,
Troy M. Stein

1. Describe the skills or attributes you believe are necessary to be an outstanding teacher.
An outstanding teacher treats their students with respect, and strives for equitable treatment of students. He or she finds ways to
motivate their students by getting to know them beyond the classroom. An outstanding teacher is innovative, always looking for a
better, creative way to reach their students.
Times change, and students change but an outstanding teacher adapts and remembers that the need for young people to have critical
thinking ability does not change. He or she always keep the students best interests in mind. An outstanding teacher understands that
there is strength in interdisciplinary cooperation, and brings in ideas from language arts, science and social studies.
2. How would you address a wide range of skills and abilities in your classroom?
Observe the learning behaviors and assess some key factors such as their vocabulary and basic skills (number sense, reasoning ability)
work with the core curriculum and build in differentiated material, such as self-pacing packets designed to support slower workers as
well as student who need more of a challenge.
Make all activities and assignments universal design. Accessible materials go a long way to address hidden disabilities without isolating
any particular student.

1. Describe the skills or attributes you believe are necessary to be an outstanding teacher.
There are many skills necessary to be an outstanding teacher. One of the most important is good communication. An effective teacher is
able to communicate expectations and content to students on a daily basis, as well as contact parents about their students triumphs and
challenges in the class. A teacher is also in constant communication with her colleagues, whether it be about a teaching method, figuring
out a way to better convey a concept to students, or a concern. Another attribute necessary to be an outstanding teacher is patience. It
often takes students some time to truly understand a concept and a teacher may have to explain a certain step or process a number of
times in order for it to become natural. Being patient with students helps them to know that the teacher has faith that they will learn
and that confusion is often a normal part of the learning process. A teacher must also be patient with misbehavior and be able to
regroup when things do not go according to plan. A tense teacher will lead to a tense situation, which is not helpful for anyone involved.
A teacher must also be creative. It takes creativity to make lessons that will both instruct students and keep them involved in the class. A
teacher must have a mastery of the content, but be creative with how the students learn the standards. One more characteristic that a
teacher must have in order to be an outstanding teacher is organization. This is the "behind the scenes" part of teaching. Working with so
many students, often with different classes, a teacher must be organized in order to teach effective lessons. All papers, handouts, lessons,
etc. must be ready for each class at the correct time in order for a class to run efficiently. A teacher must be able to track student
progress and keep grades up to date. All of this requires excellent organizational skills. While the list of skills or attributes a teacher
must possess is long (including mastery of the content, compassion, etc.), these are just a few I believe to be important.
2. How would you address a wide range of skills and abilities in your classroom?
Every student learns differently, and it is important to vary a lesson to reach all students. In order to do this, I try to incorporate a
number of different activities into lessons. In a given class period, students may take notes, work with a partner, do practice problems on
individual white boards, or try challenge problems with a group. Varying activities not only helps students who may learn in different
ways, it keeps students engaged in the lesson. I require students to take notes (often providing note packets to the lower grades), and
they use a variety of learning styles while doing so. We go through problems together, explaining steps as they happen, and then students
try problems on their own, checking answers with their classmates as they finish. This has students listening, writing, doing, and
collaborating. I am always on the lookout for new teaching methods and activities that can explain or approach a concept in a different,
2. How would you address a wide range of skills and abilities in your classroom?
more student centered, way. I often split students into groups during a class period for different activities. Allowing students to work
with a partner or in a group, even just to practice different concepts, helps to engage students of all abilities in a single classroom. Those
students who understand the concept can deepen their knowledge by teaching other members of the group, while those who still have
questions can get support from their peers. Groups can also be split by ability and students who excel can work on more challenging
problems, while I can help a group who still has questions about a concept. Working in a group allows students to move ahead within
their groups, while I am able to check in with those who are struggling.

1. Describe the skills or attributes you believe are necessary to be an outstanding teacher.
An outstanding teacher is passionate and enthusiastic about teaching. A thorough and complete knowledge of her subject matter is
necessary to present and explain the material in various ways. This teacher is well-prepared and organized but always flexible and ready
to adjust. Directions, objectives, and expectations are clear and concise. She engages her students. An outstanding teacher genuinely
cares about her students and has a great rapport with them. This teacher is both liked and respected by them. This makes classroom
management virtually a non-issue. An outstanding teacher is "real". She knows what works for her and what makes her unique. She is
confident. She has a sense of humor. An outstanding teacher is accessible to her students and communicates with the students and
parents as needed. She has high expectations for all students and strives for their success. An outstanding teacher is dedicated and she
feels "alive" as she teaches. Her love for teaching and her students is evident upon observation.
Statement continued
2. How would you address a wide range of skills and abilities in your classroom?
I address a wide range of skills abilities in my classroom by giving students audio and visual instruction and notes. I explain and
demonstrate different ways to solve or look at problems. I instruct by modeling the process in solving a problem. We do problems step
by step and check progress as we go. I engage the students. Some students are given the notes instead of taking them if that works better
for them. I use technology where appropriate. I work with the special ed and ESL teachers as necessary. Assignments and tests are
sometimes modified. I am accessible to students and make myself available to work with them one on one or in smaller groups.

I write with much interest in regard to your full time High School Mathematics Teacher position as listed
on www.K12JobSpot.com. A former colleague of mine, Matt Braa, teaches in your school district and has
great things to say about the atmosphere there. In addition, I interviewed with your team two years ago
and was particularly impressed with your focus on the success of all students as evidenced by offering an
Algebra 3 class and Math Support classes, as well as Math Intervention in lieu of studyhall supervision. I
would love to be a part of such a highly respected school district that has established offerings to support
student success. I feel I would be a valuable addition to your mathematics teaching staff.
I have worked in my current position as High School Math Teacher at Le Sueur Henderson School for the
past 18 years, teaching concepts from Algebra 2 to Trigonometry and Calculus to sophomore through
senior level students as well as remedial concepts in summer school to students entering grades nine
and ten. In this time, I have been able to learn to best communicate these concepts to students of all
learning styles and abilities; which has really deepened my sense of fulfillment for teaching at this level. I
have also, just recently, earned my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction through which I have
gained even greater insight. Though I have been very happy with the staff, colleagues, and experience
these students have given me; I am looking to grow both personally and professionally. I would very
much like to offer my skills and experience to your school.
Please review my resume, as well as my online application, for additional teaching experiences and
information. If you have questions, or if you want to schedule an interview, please contact me at 612-702-
1991. I look forward to hearing from you and meeting with you to further discuss employment
opportunities with Shakopee High School.
Sincerely,
Ann Zeiher
