RESOLUTION NO. 17-.
WHEREAS, the City of Huntsville owns a land tract of approximately 459 acres set
aside for recreational purposes, said tract being known as John Hunt Park; and
WHEREAS, approximately 140 acres of said tract has been utilized as a Municipal Golf.
Course, (the “Golf Course”); and
WHEREAS, the City of Huntsville heretofore contracted with a third party to manage
and operate said Golf Course for use by the public; and
WHEREAS, over recent years the condition of the Golf Course has declined
precipitously, as did its use by the public, whereupon the entity contracted to operate the Golf
Course experienced severe financial difficulties and was unable to continue operation of the Golf
Course, resulting in a decision by the City to close the Golf Course and explore available options
for future use of the land; and
WHEREAS, the Council approved the necessary studies to evaluate potential uses of the
property; and the Administration has made a presentation of those options to the City Couneil in
a Work Session; and
WHEREAS, the Council has received substantial public input regarding potential uses of
the park property.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Huntsville,
Alabama, that the Administration is directed to convert the use of the property to a multi-use
park, to include a cross-country running course, walking paths, mountain biking trails, golf
Griving range and practice facility, disc golf course, and dog park. Such use would allow the
City of Huntsville to potentially host cross-country running and mountain bike competitions in
addition to the daily use by thousands of citizens from throughout the Huntsville area,
ADOPTED this the 22nd day of June, 2017.
