Course: Business Mathematics (1429/5405)

Level: B.A, B.Com, BBA Semester: Autumn, 2016
Total Marks: 100 Pass Marks: 40
ASSIGNMENT No. 1
(Units 1-4)
All questions carry equal marks

Q.1 The Metrology Department has collected the following data for snowfall in Murree
during the month of January. (20)

No of Snowfall Probability
0 0.02
1 0.04
2 0.06
3 0.02
4 0.05
5 0.10
6 0.13
7 0.20
8 0.25
9 0.08
More than 9 0.05

a) What is the probability that there will be 3 or more snowfalls this January?
b) What is the probability that there will be at max 6 snow falls this January?

Q.2 a) Explain the difference between dependent and independent events with the
help of examples. (20)

b) If a random variable can take the values 0, 1, 2 and 3. Then check that
whether the following satisfy the condition of being a probability
distribution.
P(X=0) = 0.18 P(X=1) = 0.20 P(X=2) = 0.38 P(X=3) = 0.24

Q.3 a) Solve the following simultaneous linear equations by graphical method (20)
2x+y = 3
x+2y = 0
b) Solve the following inequality |x-5 |< 7.

Q.4 a) Solve the following second degree inequality (20)

x-x-20 0
c) Compute the slope of the line joining the points (0, 0) and (c, d). Also
interpret it if c and d are both positive.

Q.5 a) Explain the difference between point-slope form and slope-intercept form of
a linear equation and the conversion between them. (20)
b) If C equals degrees Celsius and F equals degrees Fahrenheit, assume that the
relationship between the two temperature scales is linear and is being
graphed with F on the vertical axis. Two data points on the line relating C
and F are (5, 41) and 25, 77). Using these points, determine the slope-
intercept equation which allows transformation from Celsius temperature to
equivalent Fahrenheit temperature. Identify and interpret the meaning of the
slope, C intercept and F intercept.

then find inverse of matrix A if possible. (20)
x+2y-3z = 1
2x-y+z = 2
x-z = 3

b) Can we multiply any two matrices? Explain.

R (q) = 500q

level of output.
