Let’s talk about Rabies:
Lilongwe Urban Mass Vaccination Campaign will run
in August 2017 — towards eradicating Rabies by 2030
Sincayazt KAMINJOLO
ith over 55,000
Wenn deaths
worldwide per annum,
Rabies remains as one of
the most deadly diseases
worldwide, to both humans
and animals. Rabies, a viral
disease, which affects all
mammals is most often
transmitted by a bite from an
infected animal or through a
wound or break on the skin
when in contact with the
saliva of a rabid animal.
More often than not dogs are
responsible for spreading the
disease to humans, with cats
and bats playing a role as well.
An animal infected with rabies
may present with either
the aggressive/furious form
whereby the animal tends to
attack without provocation, is
irritable and often salivates a
lot or the paralytic/dumb form
where the animal becomes
uncoordinated during
movement, has seizures and
becomes paralyzed.
‘Symptoms of infection in man
are relatively general and
include high fever, headache,
tiredness, confusion and
paralysis.
The scary aspect about rabies
is that once an animal or a
person for that matter starts
showing these clinical signs
there is no treatment and
death is inevitable within ten
days.
The best way to protect
yourself. and your family
include vaccinating all your
pets against rabies once
annually.
Secondly, in the event one
of your loved ones comes in
contact with a suspected rabid
animal either via a bite wound
or saliva on a wound, the
possible site of infection must
be washed thoroughly with
a disinfectant such as iodine
and medical attention sought
immediately where either
immunoglobulin may be
administered or post exposure
vaccination can be carried out.
