Exercise 1: Create an account
1. Go to www.mendeley.com and create a free account.

Exercise 2: Download the desktop application
1. Click Download Mendeley

2. Download Mendeley Desktop for Windows, Mac or Linux.

Exercise 3: Install the MS Word-plugin.
1. Open Mendeley desktop
2. Select Install MS Word Plugin from the Tools menu. Make sure that Word and Outlook is
closed while installing

Exercise 4: Install the Web Importer

1. Click Install Web importer in the Tools menu.

2. Drag and drop the grey Save to Mendeley button to your Bookmarks bar

Exercise 5 Drag and drop the PDF-file into Mendeley
1. Download a journal article to your hard drive.

2. Drag and drop the PDF-file into Mendeley and watch as Mendeley automatically provides the
bibliographic data.
(You can use any scientific journal article, but if you need an example, here is one:
http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0026347)

Exercise 6 Have Mendeley to watch your pdf files in folders

1. Click Watch Folder in the menu below the arrow

2. Select the folder(s) you want to be watched. The articles in the folder(s) are automatically
imported to Mendeley

Exercise 7 Importing references from article databases and websites with
the webimporter Save to Mendeley
1. Select Web of Science at the library homepage under the Librarys databases
http://bibliotek.science.ku.dk (Danish) / http://library.science.ku.dk (English).
2. Perform a search on global warming
3. Click the Save to Mendeley button at the menu bar
4. You can either click save all or click the +-sign for each reference you want to add to your
collection.

5. Try to import in the same way from other databases e.g. CAB Abstracts, Pubmed, Google
Scholar

NB: The Save to Mendeley button can only find the references that are actually visible in your
browser. If your search results take up more than one page, you will have to navigate to those
pages before you can import those results. If you have to import a large amount of references,
you can instead import with a textfile in RIS format.

Exercise 8 exporting several (more than ten) references from different
databases
Web of Science

1. Search for global warming


2. Choose Save to other File Formats
3. Choose the number of records you want and
4. Choose BibTex

When you click Send the following window will pop up

1. Choose Open With.


2. Choose Desktop (You have to have Mendeley Desktop installed for this)

Mendeley Desktop will open and the references will then be visible in Mendeley

CAB Abstracts

1. Search for Global Warming


2. Choose All or write how many references you want to export right above the references
3. Click Export
4. Choose RIS and
5. Choose Export Citation(s)

After you have clicked on the Export Citation(s) button, do as you did with the references from
Web of Science

Exercise 9 Importing references from Science Direct with Direct export

1. Go to Science Direct http://www.sciencedirect.com.ep.fjernadgang.kb.dk and search


global warming
2. At the result list Click the Export button and select Save to Mendeley.

3. You can choose to save all the references to Mendeley or you can select by clicking the
plus. If there are pdf files they will imported too.

OBS: The database Scopus also has a direct Export button.

Exercise 10 Perform a literature search directly from Mendeley Desktop
1. Click Literature search and perform a search on Global warming
2. You can add the references to your collection either by clicking Save Reference or by draging
and dropping the references to your collection.

Exercise 11 Add a reference manually


1. Click the arrow pointing down in the top left corner and select Add Entry Manually.

2. A pop-up window appears. Type in this reference: Wehner, Michael F.; Easterling, David R.
(2015). The global warming hiatus's irrelevance. SCIENCE Vol. 350 Iss. 6267 Pages: 1482-
1483 .
3. Click Save

Exercise 12 reading a paper directly from Mendeley Desktop

1. Click the pdf icon to open reader mode where you can read and add notes to your documents.
2. Try experimenting with the Highlight, Select and Note functions at the top of the screen.
Your annotations will stay on the document, if you later send it from Menderley to another
user.

Exercise 13 Organize your references into folders.


1. Create new folders using the button at the top left. Your new folders will appear in My
Library below All Documents. Add documents to folders simply by dragging them from All
Documents into the selected folder.

Exercise 14 Organize your references further using tags
1. To add tags to a reference, simply select it, and then click the tags field to the right. If adding
more than one tag, separate each with semicolon ;.
2. If you are adding a tag that has already been added to another reference, Mendeley will show
you suggestions as you type to speed things up.
3. When you later want to find all documents with a specific tag, you can change the author filter
at the bottom left to a tag filter.

Exercise 15 Remove duplicates.

1. In the tools menu click the Check for Duplicates button and Mendeley will tell you if
any of your references appear to be duplicates and give you the offer to merge them.
2. If you have imported the same reference from two different sources, the data might be
slightly different, but Mendeley should still be able to detect duplicates. It will inform
you if the references are not completely identical.

Exercise 16 Using your Mendeley references in Word

1. Click the references tab to find the Word plugin you installed at the beginning (Windows). If
you have a Mac computer the plug-in will have its own ribbon. The plugin is called Cite-O-
Matic.

2. Use the Insert Citation button to insert references in your text. When you click the button, a
search field will pop op, allowing you to search for the right reference in your collection. Add at
least two references to your Word document.

You can also click Go to Mendeley and search references there to cite. You just click the Cite
button when you have found the reference.

3. Use the Word Cite-o-Matic-plugin to automatically create a bibliography for your
document. Clicking the Insert Bibliography button will automatically create a full list of all
the references you have added to your document from Mendeley. Try adding another
reference and watch as the bibliography updates automatically.

4. Use the Style menu to change the style of both the in-text references and the bibliography.
Try selecting different styles and see how it affects the references. If you prefer to use a style
not available, you can choose More Styles to add a new style to Mendeley.

5. You can change Citation and Bibliography language in the citation style menu. Click more
styles and Try to switch to Danish
