Number System Solutions

Q1. Answer: A
1/9 > 1/10 > 1/11 > 1/12 > 1/13 > 1/14 > 1/15
Now, Column B: 1/12 + 1/12 + 1/12 + 1/12 + 1/12 + 1/12 + 1/12
So, it is evident that, 1/9 + 1/10 + 1/11 + 1/12 > 1/12 + 1/12 + 1/12 + 1/12
And since 1/13, 1/14 and 1/15 are even less than 1/12, their summation will definitely does not have
effect on the the total sum. Hence, it can be said that Column A is greater.

Q3. Answer: B
A number will end in 3 zeroes when it is multiplied by 3 10s. To get a 10, one needs a 5 and a 2.
Therefore, one should multiply till he encounters three 5s and three 2s.
20 = 5 * 2 * 2
22 = 2 * 11
25 = 5 * 5
So, from 20 to 25, we are getting 3 5s and 3 2s.
Therefore, one has to multiply from 20 to 25, or 6 numbers to get 3 zeroes.

Q4. Answer: C
Let's consider the values from 000 to 299
NOTE: Yes, I have started at 000 and ended at 299, even though though the question asks us to look
at the numbers from 1 to 300.
HOWEVER, notice that 000 and 299 do not have any 1's so the outcome will be the same.

Okay, there are 300 integers from 000 to 299

UNITS position
Each of the 10 digits (0, 1, 2, 3..., 9) appears the same number of times in the UNITS position.
So, the digit 1 must occur 1/10 of the time in this position.
So, the digit 1 must appear (1/10) * (300) times, which equals 30 times.

TENS position
Each of the 10 digits (0, 1, 2, 3..., 9) appears the same number of times in the TENS position.
So, the digit 1 must occur 1/10 of the time in this position.
So, the digit 1 must appear (1/10) * (300) times, which equals 30 times.

HUNDREDS position
The 1 appears in the HUNDREDS position in every integer from 100 to 199
So, the digit 1 appears 100 times.

TOTAL = 30 + 30 + 100
= 160

Q8. Answer: A
72.42 = K( 24 + n/100 )

72 + 42/100 = 24K + nk/100

24k = 72 so k = 3
nk/100 = 42/100 so nk = 42 since k=3 n=14
k+n = 14+3 = 17
Q9. Answer: E
Lets list the multiples of 6 and 4.
For 6. 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72, ....
For 4. 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60. 64, 68, 72, .....

So we are left with the bold ones. 6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66
and 12 goes with none of them. So choose E.
One more reason to choose E could be that since the question says that the number should not be
divisible by 4, so n is also not divisible by all multiples of 4 including 12.

Q10. Answer: E
Take the LCM of 11 and 13 which is 143
Therefore,
11* (14-1)=13(12-1)
s=14
r=12
r+s=26

Q13. There is a printing error here. 1234 1233 + 1232 123 will be the actual expression. Options are
wrong, as the correct answer is 0 here.
let 123 be x.
then 122 will be x-1

now it goes like this

x^4-x^3+x^2-x
take x as common.
x(x^3 - x^2 + x^1 - 1)
x((x-1)^3 + 2x^2 - 2x^1)
x((x-1))^3 + 2x(x-1))
x(x-1)((x-1)^2)+2x)============>>> eqn 1
now here x-1 stands for 122. and x stands for 123
make a fraction as like follows

[x(x-1)((x-1)^2)+2x) ]/(x-1)
So, we can see that there will be 0 remainder.

Q14. Answer: B
78= 2*3*13 now multiples of 78, 156 ....780, now 1000-780 = 220 only two more multiples of 78 can
exists. So total number of 3 digit Multiples of 78 are 9+2=11

91= 13*7--Total number of three digit multiples --9

No remember we have a common multiple as well-- 13*7*6=91*6=546

So total number of multiples--11+9 -1 =19.

Hence Answer is 19.

Q16: Answer: E
71 + . + 725 = odd number + 70 (which is 1) = even number
Now, when we divide any even number with another even number the remainder obtained is always
is even. 0 cannot be the remainder here. (I will explain in class why). All other options are odd
numbers. So, none of these, that is option E will be the correct answer.

Q17. Answer: C
K is 1 greater than j. That means all the combinations will have even or odd consecutive positive
numbers. For example, k and j could be 11,10 or 10,11...in any case the greatest common factor is
going to be 1.

Q21. Answer: D
Any prime number has a factor of 1 and itself. So lets have two cases.
Case 1, a=2, and b=3
P(2) + P(3) = 2 + 2 = 4 ( since each has got 2 factors)
And P(2*3) = 4, as 6 has got 4 factors, so B>A.
Case 2, a=3, b=3.
P(3) + P(3) = 2 + 2 = 4 (since each has got 2 factors)
P(3*3) = 3, as 9 has got 3 factors, so A>B.
We are getting contradictory answers, hence the correct answer is D

Q29. Answer: D
As per the problem, n = any multiple of 7 + 3
Now, only (n 3)2 will be divisible by 49.

Q32. Answer: A
The smallest value for n such that 5n is a square is 5.
75np can now be written as 75 x 5 x p.
This gives prime factors.... 3 x 5 x 5 x 5 x p
To make the expression a perfect cube, p will have to have factors 3 x 3 , and hence p =9
n + p = 5 + 9 = 14

Q34. Answer: C
Approach 1: Three digit number can have only following 3 patterns:
A. all digits are distinct;
B. two are alike and third is different;
C. all three digits are alike.

We need to calculate B. B=Total - A - C

Total numbers from 700 to 999 = 299 (3-digit numbers greater than 700);
A. all digits are distinct = 3*9*8=216 (first digit can have only three values 7, 8, or 9);
C. all three are alike = 3 (777, 888, 999).

So, 299-216-3=80.

Approach 2: For a 3-digit number we have a digit in the tens, hundreds and thousands place.
So counting the number of digits when tens and hundreds are same but not thousands:
i.e: 711. 722...766,788,799,800 = 8+9+9 = 26
So counting the number of digits when tens and thousands are same but not hundreds:
i.e: 707,717,...767,787,... = 9+9+9 = 27
So counting the number of digits when hundreds and thousands are same but not tens:
i.e: 770,771,772...776,778... = 9+9+9 = 27
Total it up to 80.

Q39. Answer: C
Prime factors of 105 are 3, 5, 7.
Possible Values of x and y will be either, 15 or 21, 35 or 21, 3 or 35, 7 or 15, 15 or 35, 105 or 1
In all these cases we can see that 7 is the greatest prime factor of xy.
So, A=B

Q41. Answer: C
If n2 is divisible by 72, then n2 MUST contain the prime factors 2,2,2,3,3. n2 COULD contain other
factors, but those listed are definite.

Next, if n2, or (n)(n), contains the prime factors 2,2,2,3,3, then those factors MUST be divided equally
among each n (as one n must be identical to the other). So, splitting up the prime factors 2,2,2,3,3
among each n, we see that each n MUST contain the factors 2,3, and the trap answer is (A).

A is not correct, though, since we are still left with one extra 2 as a factor. We know that this 2 is
included in n2, so it must be contained by one of the n's, leaving us with one n = 2,2,3 and the other n
= 2,3. However, since n must be identical to n, and one n MUST contain 2,2,3, the other n MUST
contain the same factors 2,2,3 as well.

Since n MUST contain at least the factors 2,2,3 we can be certain that n is a multiple of 12. Therefore,
12 is the largest positive integer that MUST divide n.

The correct answer is C
