Selecting the Right User Interface

Module Objectives
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:
1. Understand and distinguish the differences between the two user
interface options
2. Determine which interface is the right choice for you
3. Choose a default user interface option during installation
4. Change the default user interface option
5. Understand the following pages and their components:
Product Family page
Model Selection page
Configuration Choices page
Configuration Summary page

The Two SBW User Interfaces

SBW for WindowsTM offers two user interface options. The simple interface offers a
graphic product selection screen for simple product configurations, whereas the
advanced interface offers a graphical view for more complex product
configurations.

Choosing a User Interface

The simple interface, by definition, is less complex. There are buttons in place for
basic tasks. As a result, some options are only available in the advanced
interface. However, users may switch between the two options during a
configuration as needed.

Advanced User Interface Simple User Interface

SBW for Windows 12.0 Page 6 of 36 June 2005

User Interface Characteristics

Simple and intuitive
Does not require intensive user training
Memory optimization option that minimizes user complexity
Graphical product HTML-like selection screen like HP Enterprise
Configurator (eCo)
Designed to perform simple configurations
Links to product marketing information
Exports to Microsoft Excel TM, Microsoft VisioTM, and HTML
Configuration bill of materials, static rack diagram, and rack table
provided a single view called Configuration Summary page
Copy function that clones the solution as defined by the user
Configurations created using the simple user interface can be
switched to the advanced user interface to add, remove, or
change configuration options that are not available in the simple
user interface.
NOTE: If the configuration created in the simple user interface is saved
from the advanced user interface, you will no longer be able to open
it in the simple user interface.
The simple user interface was design to help users to perform quick
configurations without having deep product knowledge or the need
to configure certain product choices, such as specific memory bank
sizes or disk speeds. Instead, this interface lets the configurator
engine make those choices for the user.
If users must configure certain product choices not available in the simple user
interface, the simple user interface whiteboard may be switched to the advanced
user interface by clicking , located on the bottom left of
the Configuration Summary page.

The advanced user interface also offers the following features:

Graphical system representation
Designed for complex configurations
Copy and paste systems
System cloning
Dynamic system diagram
Connection list
Hardware list
Parts list
Application default setting

Section 2: Overview
Introduction
Hewlett-Packards premier configuration and quotation program, SBW For
Windows TM (SBW) is powered by Trilogy software. SBW is a standalone
application on the users hard drive. This configuration and quotation tool will help
you quickly and easily configure and quote HP-UX, Proliant, Alpha and Itanium
Servers; Intel RISC and Itanium workstations; peripheral and storage systems as
well as software and services products. SBW is available in two installations:
Configurator Only and Configurator and Quoter.

The complete SBW application is composed of three main components; a fourth

component is available for channel partners.
1. The configuration and quotation application. Two flavors of SBW are
available to users:
a. SBWQB: the complete package which includes the
configuration and quotation modules and requires Knowledge
Base AND Price Book files to fully operate. Users of this
application will be able to generate configurations and price
quotations including List Pricing, Discounts and Net Pricing.
b. SBW: the configurator only; this package includes ONLY
configurator module. Users of this application will be able to
generate configurations but NOT quotations. Some advantages
are:
i. Smaller installation package
ii. Best for users who have others pricing and discount tools
SBW for Windows 12.0 Page 20 of 36 June 2005

iii. ONLY generates product numbers and descriptions (Bill of

Materials).

2. Knowledge Base Files (KB): the configurations database rules.

Updates are available through the regional partner portals such as
PWEB, COL, AP-POL. Users are required to download and install the
latest Knowledge Base files while using this program. Two versions of
Knowledge Base files are available to users:
a. Full Products: Contains HP-UX, Proliant, Alpha and Itanium
Servers; Intel, RISC and Itanium workstations; peripheral and
storage systems as well as software and services products
b. Full Products with Solution Templates: In addition to the
Full Products KB, this version of the knowledge base provides pre-
configured templates for a number of popular configuration
3. Price Book Files (PB): HPs list price and contractual files. These
files are updated and posted every working Monday and on the 1st and
15th of every month. Availability varies by region/country. Ask your HP
representative for more information on PB update and posting in your
country.
4. Discount Files: Channel Partner specific discount information.
