The 2017 Watson Analytics Global Competition

Call for Registration

Objectives

The Watson Analytics Global Competition (WAGC) is a worldwide inter-varsities


competition aimed at generating innovative analytics solutions from students using IBM
Watson Analytics.

Teams
Teams of 3 students at undergraduate or graduate level and an academic
supervisor.
Note: Each team must have an academic supervisor.

Topic

The topic will be on environmental issues. Your main task is to apply Watson Analytics
(including data refinement, exploration, predictive model, social media analytics &
dashboard functions) and develop innovative analytics solutions with regards to
environment, e.g. climate change, energy consumption, carbon footprint-GDP
correlation, greenhouse gas emission, air quality-health impact dashboard, etc. Besides
the suggested datasets/sources, you may apply any other real-world dataset to
illustrate your approach (the different datasets/sources can be combined).

Note: Watson Analytics is a user-friendly tool and normally students can master the tool
within days by working through the tutorials.

Prizes

Grand prize for top two finalist teams: To be announced

Top 10 finalist teams: A finalist certificate for each team member and supervisor.

Conditions of participation

This is a worldwide competition which allows students to apply Watson Analytics to


develop innovative analytics solutions.

Participation: Submissions are welcome from teams of 3 students at undergraduate


or graduate (e.g. US masters programs) / postgraduate (e.g. master programs in UK or
Australia) level. The participation of students from analytics, data science, MBA,
information systems disciplines is highly desired. (PhD or Master by research students
are not eligible).

Submission: The submissions should include a report (with dashboard screenshots and
commentary, predictive models, social media analytics, recommendations etc, and
Watson Analytics login detail) and a 5 to 10 minutes video presentation link of the
teams solution (to be uploaded to YouTube). Your presentation document should
explain the purpose and benefits of your solution. Feel free to make reasonable
assumptions as needed.

Evaluation criteria: Submissions will be judged based on Innovation/ creativity of the


solution, Quality of commentary and recommendations, Expected benefits for users
and relevant stakeholders, Organization and presentation of the submission.
