Summary
About the Agency

This position is located in the Office of Safety and Security at Peace Corps headquarters
and reports to the Chief of Emergency Management and Physical Security Division. The
Emergency Management Specialist will coordinate functions to prevent, protect from,
mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disaster that affect
Peace Corps staff and operations. Preparation and response efforts are generally captured
in the agencys occupant emergency plans, continuity of operations plans, and emergency
action plans. In support of these plans the incumbent will identify appropriate mitigation
strategies, deliver trainings, coordinate exercises, participate in activations, evaluate
capabilities, and revise plans when necessary. The incumbent will coordinate mitigation,
preparedness, response, and recovery efforts with various agency stakeholders.

Duties
The Emergency Management Specialist performs the following major duties:

Planning and preparedness: Conduct surveillance of emergency conditions locally,


nationally, and worldwide. Research topics of importance to emergency management
plans and preparedness activities. Review with more senior member of the team the
need to alter current plans or develop new plans to manage emergencies in an ever-
evolving risk environment. Develop and present recommendations for
implementation to more senior manager.
Training: Foster an awareness of the emergency management program and program
requirements throughout the agency. Develop and deliver training to all incoming
staff on appropriate emergency response procedures. Assist in the development and
delivery of trainings tailored to individuals and groups fulfilling specific emergency

management functions as detailed in various emergency response plans.
Exercise and testing Assist in the preparation and participation in applicable
emergency management exercises, including those associated with the occupant
emergency and continuity of operations plans. Perform all tests of emergency
management equipment and communications devices.
Evaluation: Establish and track programmatic performance metrics to demonstrate
the effectiveness of emergency management programs and plans. Develop and
manage an after action program to identify lessons learned, assign tasks, and track
the implementation of corrective actions.
