Update 26/09/2014

I originally wrote this post in May 2014. concerning update DP 7.x to 8.10. The same

steps will also work with the update directly to version 9.0. The update to 9.0 is even a

little less problematic, the problems of the IDB upgrades over the setup of 8.x are xed

in this setup.

In addition, I have added two more Printscreens for instructions

General:

This post is intended to upgrade an existing DP demonstrate 7.0x infrastructure to

version 8.10. This is the basis for other patches such update to 8:11 or 8:12, etc to install!

With DP 8.x a new IDB was introduced on PostGre SQL base. This replaces the RAIMA

DB, which has been used until now. With the new Data Protector IDB now scales much

further. It can be protected so much more servers and data using a Cell Server. More

info can be found in the release notes and white papers of HP Data Protector.

Preparation:

DB check

In order for the update and the migration of fnames, which is performed during the

installation works, the IDB should have no errors. Therefore, a test before the upgrade

makes sense. This is done via the "omnidbcheck" command. I carry out each following:

1. omnidbcheck -extended

2. omnidbcheck -bf

3. omnidbcheck -dc

The rst command includes the two lower. This, however, list the additional detailed

information about the BinaryFiles and Detail Catalog Files. The Extended check can

take several minutes to hours depending on the size the IDB, fragmentation and disk

speed.

If errors are issued, they should be corrected rst

Service Account DP Services

The new IDB the corresponding services should run under a service account. It has

been found that problems can occur otherwise. So when running all services still

under Local System, the CRS and UIProxy Service should be amended accordingly. The

account needs to on the server locale Admin rights. Also the account in DP must be

entered under the Admin users.

******

Update 22/10/2014 : "The Data Protector Inet Service" on the cell runs by default under

"Local System". Has this changed (eg if you want to secure a network share from a NAS)

should the account be changed prior to the update again to "Local System". If this is not

done, so it can come moment during the update to the following message:

Faulting application name: omniinetpasswd.exe, Version: 9.0.87.0, timestamp:

0x53964e71

Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.2.9200.17046, timestamp: 0x53b4864c

Exception code: 0xc0000005

The upgrade process then passes through, but at the end the following error is logged:

[CRITICAL] The IDB serviceaccount Could not be added to the database impersonation

Inet.

This is unpleasant but not tragic. With me everything ran awlessly. Also, the support

has conrmed that this error may occur if the DP Inet service does not run under the

account LocalSystem.

******

Basically, the upgrade steps in the Install Guide of DP are described. The chapter

should be read before the upgrade !! To see www.hp.com/go/dataprotector. There under

"Resources" -> "Manuals and Support Matrices". To access an HP account is required

with active DP Support

IMPORTANT:

The upgrade is associated with downtime of Data Protector. Therefore

should no backup or restore jobs run.

Before the update, the DB Services stop (omnisv -stop) and the folder

"cong", "DB40" and the le "omnirc" wegkopieren as a backup. These data

could be returned in case of failure always to previously installed DP

version.

upgrade:

Are all points tested under "preparation", can be started with the update.

Note: During the upgrade, the IDB (fnames Part) thus exporting this data thereafter in

the new DB can be imported. Depending on the size of the IDB, this could take hours

several mintues!

1. On the Cell server with an Admin account login (most ideal with the

service account login under which the DP services are running)

2. The setup.exe under the x8664 Folder start as an administrator . This is

important, even if the UAC is off !! Otherwise it may lead to errors during

the setup.

3. DP recognizes the already vorhande 7.x installation

4. Next, the Installed Komponennten be recognized. Check whether Ok.

5. Next. Enter User / Credentials under which div. DP Services run thereafter.

6. Next. Select the Windows Firewall Rules are the automatically created for

DP.

7. Summary for installation, press Install

8. Now, the setup is running. The existing IDB is exported. The 7.x

installation is removed and DP 8.0 is entspechend installed. Then the

service starts. Now automatically be the data that has been previously

exported (fnames), imported into the new IDB. This may take some time.

9. Wait until all are completed import. It appears which must not contain any

errors a Summary !! After the installation is complete

The rst part of the installation is now complete. The Fnames were imporitert in the

new IDB. This is now located under "Omniback \ Server \ DB80" (previously under

"Omniback \ DB40)
When opening the GUI now shows a certicate message that must be acknowledged.

The Detail Catalog Binary Files (DCBF) are still in search of the "old" DB40 IDB. This

must now be more migrated. How this can be done, is described in a later post.

Note: All new detail Catalog information is written structure from the update to the new

IDB.

Basically the Cell server is now functional again. Install server needs to be updated and

the clients. In this "standard tasks" is not discussed here.

Last should the following two points are checked respectively executed

1. Omnidbcheck, this must take out errors

2. Thereafter, a backup of the IDB create (Best Practice)

Possible issues during the update:

The Ugrade process begins to run, then ends but as follows (excerpt from the error

string):
