CHEMICAL AND FOOD ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

CHE 425
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING LAWS AND ETHICS

VILLANUEVA, DIANNE M.
CHE-3302

ENGR. MARY ROSE F. PERSINCULA

INSTRUCTOR
1. What is the scope of work of a Chemical Engineer?

A chemical engineer, who typically holds either a bachelor's degree, master's degree,
and/or Ph.D. in chemical engineering, may work in a range of areas including environmental
engineering, biochemical engineering, food engineering or waste engineering. Chemical
engineers design, develop and operate the processes and equipment used to change raw materials
into useful products. They work in factories, laboratories, and offices and are involved in the
research, development and implementation of chemical processes required to produce a variety
of products such as food, drinks, cleaning products, textiles, medicines, fuels, solvents, adhesives
and plastics. Chemical engineers' main work is to develop new industrial processes and design
new process plants and equipment or modify existing ones.
However, the practice of chemical engineering, though vast, is regulated by RA 9297:
ChELaw of the Philippines. Following is the list of practice of ChE according to the law:
1. Consultation requiring chemical engineering knowledge, skill and proficiency
2. Investigation
3. Estimation and/or valuation
4. Planning
5. Preparation of feasibility studies
6. Designing
7. Preparation of specifications
8. Supervision of installation
9. Operation, including quality management; but excluding chemical analysis and operation of
the chemical laboratory
10. The teaching, lecturing and reviewing of professional chemical engineering subjects
Since chemical engineering is a vast field, the job prospectus, entry level chemical
engineering jobs, chemical engineering intern-ships and career options of chemical engineer are
varied and different. Following are the jobs for the licensed chemical engineers,

2. How is the scope of work of a Chemical Engineer different to that of a Chemist?

o A chemist deals with small amounts of materials in glassware on a laboratory bench. The
chemical engineer deals with large scale reactions with factory scale equipment.
What chemists and chemical engineers study is remarkably similar, except that chemists focus
primarily on researching and developing chemical products, while chemical engineers focus on
manufacturing chemical products at a large scale. A chemist may make a few grams of a new
compound, while a chemical engineer will scale up the process to make it by the ton, and at a
profit.
o A chemist is more likely to be developing new compounds and materials; a chemical
engineer is more likely to be working with existing substances.
Chemists focus on the background of the chemical science which is composed of organic,
inorganic, analytical, physical, and bio-chemistry. They tend to develop novel materials and
processes, analyzing substances, measuring the physical properties of substances and testing
theories. On the other hand, chemical engineers have a multi-disciplinary in approach, since the
field involves math and physics to be able to understand heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and
equipment design, among others. From this, chemical engineers turn new ideas and discoveries
into useful, attainable products by falling into the design, manufacture and operation of plants
and machinery, and also develop new materials and substances.
o The chemical engineer will be more concerned with heating and cooling large reaction
vessels, pumps and piping to transfer materials, and plant design and operation, while a
chemist will be more concerned with establishing the details of the reactions before the
plant is designed.
Chemists tend to work on the front lines of research in companies, universities and government
agencies. They test the actual properties of chemicals, and they also apply this knowledge to test
how chemicals function within different potential products, such as food or drugs. Chemical
engineers, on the other hand, will often take a product developed by chemists and figure out how
to develop it on a business scale, determining whether cheaper or higher-quality components
should be used and deciding what kind of manufacturing processes to use on the factory floor.

3. What are the current challenges of the Chemical Engineering professional as a whole?
Humanitys Top Ten Problems for next 50 years
1. ENERGY 6. TERRORISM & WAR
2. WATER 7. DISEASE
3. FOOD 8. EDUCATION
4. ENVIRONMENT 9. DEMOCRACY
5. POVERTY 10. POPULATION
Considering this list, the current challenges of the Chemical Engineering professional as
a whole are to make solutions to these problems, as what in their scope of work they can
perform.
Talking about energy, even though there is no end in sight for carbon-based fuels. And
there are chemical engineers trying to make this process as efficient and clean as possible, this is
inherently unsustainable. At some point, particularly with increased world-wide usage, we will
run out. CO2 levels in the atmosphere will continue to increase and there is certainly a possibility
of deleterious climate change.
This is a great challenge for the chemical engineers of today. They need to continue
develop unlimited and inexpensive energy (with new ways of energy generation, storage, and
transportation) to pave the way to a truly sustainable future.
And so to obtain renewable energy, chemical engineering professionals are all called to
face the challenges given by the world to them. Following are the things to be considered by
them,
Solar cells New materials, designed on a molecular scale, to capture energy more
efficiently, New processes to make these at lower cost.
Biomass Enabling technologies are needed
Wood, grasses to liquid fuels Breaking down cellulose to fermentable sugars is a
combined chemistry and mass transfer challenge
Geothermal Design affordable systems to efficiently transfer energy
Wind Power Better materials: lighter and stiffer

Next to energy is health care that has a thing with the problems of the world in water,
food and environment.
New health care products is a must and just like in renewable energy, chemical
engineering professionals perform an important role in achieving this another challenge of the
world. Following are just few examples of works that call for chemical engineering
professionals,
Implantable insulin pump - Process control is a key issue
Replacement human tissue Liver, heart, currently being grown in laboratories
Growing tissue - Requires even more Reaction Engineering than most chemicals
currently manufactured
New drug delivery strategies Molecular targeting to specific sites in the body
Mass transport issues cdetermine if this will work
Feedback drug delivery for many treatments Several on line measurements used to
prevent side effects and adjust dosing for best benefit

4. What are the requirements for the application to licensure examination?
