The Wardens, Vestries and congregations of Emmanuel, St. Andrews and St. Matthews Episcopal
Churches are excited and happy to announce: The Rev. William Steven White has accepted a call to serve God
as Rector, with our three churches in Chenango County. We are eager to welcome Fr. Steve into our
communities and share this news with New Berlin, Norwich, and South New Berlin residents. Please offer Fr.
Steve a warm welcome when you see him. He will be living at the St. Andrew Rectory, 40 South Main St., New
Berlin, NY and serving our three churches.
Fr. Steve previously served as Priest in Charge at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in Kingsport, TN, from
March 2015 till June this year. Before that he served as Curate at St. James Episcopal Church, Knoxville, TN,
from June 2013- March 2015.
Fr. Whites formal training started at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Chattanooga, TN:
Bachelor of Science in Psychology, received 1985. Then he attended The University of Tennessee at Knoxville,
Knoxville, TN; Master of Business Administration in Marketing and Finance, received 1988. And then he went
to The University of the South, School of Theology, Sewanee, TN; Master of Divinity 2013. In his own words,
Fr. Steve says this: Born and bred Southerner, raised in Chattanooga. Lived a couple of years, though, in
Michigan, working for Dow Chemical. I love gardening and canning, along with raising bees (they do most of the
hard work). When Im not working in the yard, I love traveling by taking the back roads and just heading in a
general direction and stopping at local attractions (best stop so far is The Elvis is Alive Museum). I am a non-
gourmet cook and make good Southern food. I am a book hound, especially regarding Ancient Roman and
Medieval English history. I prefer jazz and folk but nothing too earnest. I also love to can veggies, etc. Need to
find out how to garden up north. I have no clue what growing seasons are like. Never, in a million years, did I
ever think I'd be living in New York. But that's how God rolls.
The Rev. Steve White will lead his first service for us at a joint (all three congregations) service at St.
Andrews Episcopal Church, New Berlin, NY on July 2, 2017 at 9:30 AM. All are welcome, and there will be
refreshments at a reception after the service.

The origins of the Fourfold Franciscan Blessing are less clear and the prayer is sometimes attributed to the
Benedictines rather than the Franciscans but regardless of where it originated the prayer is profoundly inspiring:

May God bless you with discomfort. Discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may
live deep within your heart. Amen

May God bless you with anger. Anger at injustice, oppression and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice,
freedom and peace. Amen

May God bless you with tears. Tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation and war, so that you may
reach out your hand to comfort them and turn their pain into joy. Amen

May God bless you with foolishness. Enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you
can do what others claim cannot be done. Amen
