PROBLEM #1: (15 Marks)

A single horizontal force of 600N is applied to end D of the
lever ABD. Knowing that the portion AB of the lever has a
diameter of 30mm, determine
a) x, y, and xy, on an element located at point H having
sides parallel to the x and y axes
b) draw Mohrs circle (need not to scale)
c) principal stresses 1, 2 and max shear stress max
d) draw the rotated stress element showing the principal
stresses

PROBLEM #2: (5 Marks)

For the problem 1, determine the tensile yield strength required to provide a safety factor of 2
with respect to initial yielding, based on maximum shear stress theory and energy distortion
theory.

Solution
1 = 86.5 MPa , 3 = -29.9 MPa, 2 = 0, max = 58.2 MPa

a) Max Shear Stress theory

Sy = 2 X 2 X max = 232.8 MPa

a) Energy Distortion theory

e = (86.52 + 29.92 86.5 * -29.9)1/2 MPa ; e = 104.70 MPa
Sy = 2 X e = 209.41 MPa

PROBLEM #3: (20 Marks)

The circular ring shown below is made from a circular
cross-section 3 diameter bar. The inside diameter of the
ring is 4. For the load shown, calculate the total internal
stresses at the inner and the outer material fibres at section
A-A. Where would you expect to encounter the highest
shear stress and what is its value? [The equation of the
eccentricity of a circular beam with a circular cross-section
is provided]
