If
there is one cuisine to unite Malaysians, it would have to be nasi lemak. In
Malaysia, any time is nasi lemak oclock. Knowing that this nasi lemak or
internationally called as coconut rice, is a well-loved Malaysian delicacy, local
food website, Friedchillies.com introduced the I Eat Nasi Lemak festival in 2014.
With its first two installment having been a success, the I Eat Nasi Lemak Festival
was held again and was by far the biggest one, recording a number of 40 vendors
from all over the nation serving nasi lemak hunters throughout the day. All nasi
lemak vendors setted up stalls under one roof for the one day event at the TM
Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur from 9 am to 5pm.
Wrapped in a banana leaf and newspaper, the basic serving of nasi lemak
consists of a portion of rice cooked in coconut milk and served with spicy
sambal, together with crunchy fried peanuts and anchovies. Going beyond the
basic serving, a choice of add-ons like squid with hot sauce or sambal sotong and
also, spicy chicken rendang were offered by vendors from different states of
Malaysia to give variations. From Penang, there was a vendor serving up a side
dish of salmon asam pedas called Nasi Lemak Pendekar Mustar. From Malacca,
there was a vendor called Nasi Lemak Hujung Pasir, who served nasi lemak with
spinach. All in all, it can be said that the event was a huge success in serving up
Malaysias best loved cuisine, in various forms and names, under one roof. When
it comes to nasi lemak, everyone has a different way with it. Even with the
cultural differences, every Malaysians still sit down together to get the taste of
that one Malaysian dish. With that one dish, Malaysians are truly united despite
their differences.
