Origins
InsearchofaSpiritualexperience,professorsfromDuquesneUniversity,a
CatholicuniversityinPittsburgh,attendedtheCongressoftheCursillo
movementinAugust1966.Whilevisiting,theywereintroducedtothe
bookentitledTheCrossandtheSwitchblade,whichemphasizedtheHoly
SpiritandtheSpiritscharisms.Thisbookbecamethefocusoftheirstudies
andfurtherledthemtopursuetheHolySpirit.

InJanuary1967,professorsRalphKeiferandPatrickBourgeoisattendeda
prayermeetingwheretheyultimatelyreceivedthebaptismintheHoly
Spirit.Thefollowingweek,KeiferlaidhandsonotherDuquesne
professors,andtheyalsohadanexperiencewiththeSpirit.Then,in
February,duringagatheringatDuquesneUniversity,morepeopleasked
Keifertoprayoverthem.Thisledtotheeventatthechapelwheretheytoo
receivedtheHolySpiritandspokeintongues,aswellasmanyother PentecostbyElGreco

studentswhowerepresentinthechapel.[5]Keifersentthenewsofthis
eventtotheUniversityofNotreDame,whereasimilareventlateroccurred,andtheRenewalbegantospread.[6]

Expansion
Adherentsofthemovementformedprayergroupscalledcovenantcommunities.Inthesecommunities,members
practicedastrongercommitmenttospiritualidealsandcreateddocuments,orcovenants,thatsetuprulesoflife.
OneofthefirststructuredcovenantcommunitieswastheWordofGodCommunity.Itaffiliatedwiththe
InternationalCommunicationsOfficeinthe1980s,anditscontinuedgrowthresultedinalargeroverallcommunity
calledTheSwordoftheSpirit.TheoriginalWordofGodCommunityeventuallysplitfromTheSwordofthe
Spirit,however.Ofthetwooriginalfoundersofthecommunities,onestayedwiththeWordofGodandfoundedan
internationalministrythatreachedEasternEuropeandAfrica,whiletheotherremainedpresidentoftheSwordof
theSpirit,whichasof2007,had47membercommunitiesand16affiliatedcommunitiesaroundtheworld.[1]

Inadditiontothecovenantinstitutions,theCatholicCharismaticRenewalalsoexperiencedinternational
developmentduetomissionarypriestswhoexperiencedthebaptismoftheHolySpiritwhilevisitingtheUnited
Statesandimplementedtheirownsuchserviceswhentheyreturnedhome.TheInternationalCatholicCharismatic
RenewalServiceshadasignificantroleintheguidanceofthisformofexpansion.[1]

intheworld,withover160millionmembers.[7]ParticipantsintheRenewal
alsocooperatewithnonCatholicecclesiasticalcommunitiesandother
Catholicsforecumenism,asencouragedbytheCatholicChurch.[8]

TheEucharistbeingelevatedduringa
CatholicCharismaticRenewalhealing
service,inwhichthefaithfulnotonly
prayforspiritualandphysical
healings,butalsoformiracles.
TheCharismaticelementoftheChurchisseenasbeingevidenttodayasit
wasintheearlydaysofChristianity.SomeCatholicCharismatic
communitiesconducthealingservices,gospelpowerservices,outreaches
andevangelizationswherethepresenceoftheHolySpiritisbelievedtobe
felt,andhealingsandmiraclesaresaidtotakeplace.[9]Themissionofthe
CatholicCharismaticRenewalistoeducatebelieversintothetotalityofthe
declarationofthegospels.Thisisdonebyapersonalrelationshipwith
JesusChristaonetoonerelationshipwithJesusisseenasapossibilityby
theCharismatic.HeisencouragedtotalktoJesusdirectlyandsearchfor
whatTheLordissayingsothathislifewillbeonewithHimtowalkinthe

CCRGoldenJubilee2017

InresponsetotheinvitationofPopeFrancis,[11]ICCRSandCatholic
FraternityareorganizingtogethertheCatholicCharismaticRenewal
PraiseandWorshipduringaCCR GoldenJubileeeventin2017.TheeventwillbeginonMay31and
HealingService. celebrationswillcontinueuntilPentecostMassonJune4.[12]Registration
totheeventwillbegininJune2016.[13]

ReactionfromtheChurchhierarchy
TheinitialreactiontothemovementbytheChurchhierarchywascautiouslysupportive.Someinitiallysupported
itasbeingaharbingerofecumenism(greaterunityofGospelwitnessamongthedifferentChristiantraditions).It
wasthoughtthatthesepracticeswoulddrawtheCatholicChurchandProtestantcommunitiesclosertogetherina
trulyspiritualecumenism.Today,theCatholicCharismaticRenewalenjoyssupportfrommostoftheChurch's
hierarchy,fromthePopetobishopsofdiocesesaroundtheworld,asarecognizedecclesialmovement.[14][15][16][17]

Fourpopeshaveacknowledgedthemovement:PopePaulVI,PopeJohnPaulII,BenedictXVI,andPopeFrancis.
PopePaulVIacknowledgedthemovementin1971andreaffirmeditin1975.[1][18]Hewentontosaythatthe
movementbroughtvitalityandjoytotheChurchbutalsomentionedforpeopletobediscerningofthespirits.[5]
PopeJohnPaulIIwasalsosupportiveoftheRenewalandwasinfavorofitsconservativepolitics.[1]He(aswell
asthenCardinalRatzinger,PopeEmeritusBenedictXVI)acknowledgedgoodaspectsofthemovementwhile
urgingcaution,pointingoutthatmembersmustmaintaintheirCatholicidentityandcommunionwiththeCatholic
Church.[14]

PopeJohnPaulII,inparticular,madeanumberofstatementsonthemovement.OnNovember30,1990,The
PontificalCouncilfortheLaitypromulgatedthedecreewhichinauguratedtheCatholicFraternityofCharismatic
CovenantCommunitiesandFellowships.BrianSmithofBrisbane,electedPresidentoftheExecutiveofthe
Fraternity,calledthedeclarationthemostsignificanteventinthehistoryofthecharismaticrenewalsincethe1975

neededdefenseofChristianlifeinsocietieswheresecularism
andmaterialismhaveweakenedmanypeople'sabilityto
respondtotheSpiritandtodiscernGod'slovingcall.Your

thefirstplacebypersonalwitnesstotheindwellingSpiritand
byshowingforthHispresencethroughworksofholinessand

"TheinstitutionalandcharismaticaspectsarecoessentialasitweretotheChurchsconstitution.Theycontribute,
althoughdifferently,tothelife,renewalandsanctificationofGodsPeople.Itisfromthisprovidentialrediscovery
oftheChurchscharismaticdimensionthat,beforeandaftertheCouncil,aremarkablepatternofgrowthhasbeen
establishedforecclesialmovementsandnewcommunities."[17]

Criticism
CharismaticCatholicsandtheirpracticeshavebeencriticizedfordistractingCatholicsfromauthenticChurch
teachingsandtraditions,especiallybymakingtheworshipexperiencemoreakintoPentecostalProtestantism.[20]
AccordingtoSamuelRodriguez,CharismaticservicesinAmericasimplyhelpinincreasingthenumberof
CatholicsconvertingtoPentecostalandevangelicaldenominations:IfyouareinvolvedinaCharismaticservice
today,intenyearstimeinevitablyyouaregoingtoendupinoneofmychurches.[21]

TheCatholicChurchteachesthatChristisactuallypresentonthealtarinthesacrificeoftheMass,whenapriest
consecratesbreadandwinetobecomethebodyandbloodofJesus.Criticsofthecharismaticmovementarguethat
practicessuchasfaithhealingdrawattentionawayfromtheMassandthecommunionwithChristthattakesplace
therein.

OtherscriticizethemovementforremovingorobscuringtraditionalCatholicsymbols(suchasthecrucifixand
SacredHeart)infavorofmorecontemporaryexpressionsoffaith.[22]
