Name and Grade Level: Japan Unit: Grade 3, Lesson 4

Title: Culture

Content Knowledge - Objective: What beliefs, ideas, celebrations,


traditions, and values make up the culture of Japan?

Students will look at images gathered online by the teacher that


represent Japans beliefs, ideas, celebrations, traditions, and culture to
gain an understanding of Japans culture and participate in a Kahoot
about Japans culture.

Direct Instruction- Students will be shown images gathered online and


have direct instruction on the culture and beliefs in Japan.

Class Discussion-Students will participate in a class discussion about


the culture, traditions, and beliefs in Japan.

Students will be informally assessed throughout the lesson during the
class discussion.

Technology for Learners Being Used


Students will view the images gathered by the teachers through the
SMARTboard. Students will use computers or iPads to complete the
Kahoot.

Technology for Teachers Being Used

The teacher will use the internet to gather images of Japan culture.
The teacher will use a computer to create a Kahoot for the students.

Critical Thinking: Students will use critical thinking skills during our
class discussion about the culture, traditions, and beliefs in Japan, as
well as during the Kahoot.

Communication: Students will be communicating through the class


discussion during the lesson.

they build upon each other's ideas.

Remembering/Understanding- Students will use the images in the


lesson to recall information about Japans culture, traditions, and
beliefs.

Materials: Computer, SMARTboard, images gathered from online

Introduction/Engagement:

Students will have images or words on their desks that have to do with
Japanese culture traditions, and/or beliefs; students will have to try to
match their picture with the correct name. Students will get 5 minutes
to go around the classroom and try to find their match. After the
lesson, we will go around the room to see if students matched correctly.
For example, someone will have the word Kimono and someone will have a
picture of a Kimono and the students goal is to match the pictures and
words correctly.
Lesson: (developmental procedures)

Students will start the lesson with the matching engagement


activity.
Students will then learn about Japans culture, traditions, beliefs,
and more through looking at images online that the teacher
gathered, while listening to the teacher talking about each image.
After the lesson, students will go around sharing their picture and
the word they matched it with, to see whether or not the
students were correct. As a class we will correct the ones that
were incorrect.
Students will complete a Kahoot about Japanese culture.

Modification:
Scaffolded note packets based on the students tiers.

Enrichment:

Students can create a Haiku poem using information they learned


about the Japanese culture.
