According to the report by the Indian Journal of
Surgery, 80% road accident victims in India do
not receive any emergency care within the first
hour, when the chances of victims survival are
highest.

Consequently, 35 people die in road accidents

every hour on average owing to the unavailability
of medical care in the right time; and over
130,000 die annually (National Crime Records
Bureau).
4
Problem Statement
Problem#1:

The accident is not notified at the time of

happening.

Solution:

make a system that can automatically detect

accidents and report to the authority.

5
Problem Statement
Problem#2:
The delay in emergency response by the emergency
vehicle due to ,
Congested traffic.
Waiting in the traffic intersections
Unavailability.
Solution:
make no/less delay in emergency response trip by ,
Reducing congestion.
no waiting at the traffic intersections.
6
Problem Statement
Problem#3:

The reluctance of the bystanders in helping the

victim.

Solution:

make a system where people can help the victim

without being trapped into legal harassments.

7
Aim & Objective
Aim: to develop a Smartphone integrated VANET
based vehicle tracking module that can facilitate the
following purposes ,

Traffic clearance for emergency vehicles

Accident detection
Automatic ambulance initiation and rescue
Objective :to develop
Hardware units
Android app
Server
8
VANET Overview
Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) incorporate vehicle-
to-vehicle and vehicle-to infrastructure communication .

aim to provide, traffic management, a reduction in traffic

congestion, accident detection and cooperative collision .

Vehicles are equipped with communication, positioning and

computation devices. They form a huge self-organized ad
hoc network (VANET) to communicate with each other as
well as roadside units.

The Hosted Database and the Web
Application
The server has the following databases:
A hospital database - containing hospital name and its location
(GPS coordinates) details.
A vehicle database- containing detail of all registered vehicles.
Registered user database -contains all the details of the registered
users.
The web application consists of

India records one of the highest number of
road accidents in the world. In 2011, there
was one accident every minute and one
life lost every 3.7 minutes. Statistics
released by the Ministry of Road
Transport and Highways in 2011 say there
were 4,97,000 road accidents that left
1,45,485 people dead.

28
THE PROBLEM
.At the same time, bystanders, who are on scene even before
police, are not empowered to even provide basic assistance.
Instances of people, who provided the first aid being roped into
long court cases as witnesses and even suspects, make them
reluctant to call emergency services or help victims. The law in
India is silent about the rights of such Good Samaritans,
without ensuring anonymity, they are asked to appear for
hearings and sometimes even face criminal charges.
Till now, large parts of India do not have access to any kind of
emergency medical services, State provided or private. Even in
the States with relatively better emergency response systems, it
is limited to the ambulance services. However considering poor
road conditions, traffic congestion and great distances
ambulances often fail to promptly reach the victims. It takes on
average 25 minutes in cities for the ambulance to reach the
location after the accident was reported. In addition it is a
resource intensive model that makes it unlikely to cover many
parts of the country in near future.
29
This project is developed for implementing major applications of
VANETs i.e. Congestion detection, Emergency Notification,
accident detection ,post-accident rescue, traffic clearance for
emergency vehicles and cooperative collision warning.
In this project, a Smartphone integrated driving safety application is
designed that exploits low-cost dedicated hardware within the
vehicle.

To reduce fatalities in road accidents, Piyush is creating a cohesive

response system connecting citizens, police, ambulances and
hospitals. This chain of survival, includes timely notification to
appropriate stakeholders about the occurrence of the accident,
followed by by-stander care, transportation of the victim to the
hospital and preparedness of the hospital to receive the patient.

30
Contd...
There is loss of life owing to the delay in the arrival of ambulance to the hospital in
the golden hour. This delay is particularly caused by the stretched congested traffic
and waiting of the ambulance in the traffic signals . It would be great if the roads in
its path are cleared and the signals in its direction of travel are ON.

In this concern, a novel traffic signal priority control method in an effort to clear the
path for emergency vehicles is also modelled.

Retrieved data from the vehicle are processed and then transmitted via the
Smartphone to the dedicated server.
