D.G. Vaishnav College

D.G. Vaishnav College, an institution affiliated to the University Of Madras was established in
the year 1964 with the core values of duty, discipline and dignity. The college believes in holistic
development of its students rather than mere quantification of academic knowledge. The
Institution nurtures over 6000 students in diverse fields of specialization with the help of
dedicated staffs. The college has been accredited with grade “A” by the NAAC Committee. In
addition the college has also been granted autonomy this year.

Department of Human Resource Management

The M.A. in Human Resources Management programme, initiated by the “Post Graduate
Department of Human Resources Management”, was launched in the year August 2008. It is an
intensive two year full-time course which is a combination of both class-room instruction as well
as practical training. It is a job-oriented course which is designed to nurture the skills and
confidence in young men and women to become efficacious HR professionals. The broad
objectives of this programme are to sensitize students to the social, political, economic, and
ecological environments of the society; and to enable them become effective business leaders
and decision-makers to contribute to organizational effectiveness.

‘Concurrent Fieldwork’ is a significant feature of this P.G. programme. The course is

designed in such a way that it provides excellent exposure to the students in various facets of the
industry starting from manufacturing and service sectors to IT and ITES sectors. Here, the
students are placed in the HR departments of various reputed organizations to gain hands-on
experience in the operations of HR.

‘Summer Placement’ is an important step for the students towards the understanding of
“Industrial Organizations” and “Human Resources” outside South India as the department
mandates each of its students to undergo their internship outside the boundaries of South India.
This enriches the students’ practical knowledge through exposure and observation, which in turn
helps them acquire relevant people skills and knowledge.

Dr.Vidhya Srinivasan, Head – P.G. Department of Human Resources Management,

strongly believes that HR professionals should not only equip themselves with strong Managerial
and People-oriented skills but should also have a clinch over the basic concepts of Social-Work
practices undertaken by a company. Hence, “Corporate Social Responsibility” training is an
additional exclusive docket included in this curriculum which invokes a sense of corporate
commitment in the students towards employees, community, and society at large.

The department, which constantly strives at enhancing student learning, organizes regular
guest lectures by inviting eminent personalities from a spectrum of industries, which allows the
students to move one step ahead from a regular theory-conducive environment to a practical-
conducive environment. These sessions help in updating the students about the latest and current
trends prevailing in the ever competitive market. Thus, fostering the budding professionals to
carve a niche for them in the industry.
The department encourages the students to attend regular HR conferences, Seminars and
various Workshops. One such Workshop, in which the student community has been an active
member, is the “Indian Society for Training and Development” (ISTD), which helps in providing
orientation skills on Training and Development, as well as specializes in functional areas of
Training and Human Resource Development. This is yet another erudite platform organized by
the department for the students, where experts from leading companies and consultancies train the
students on various aspects.

From Video Discussions, Case-Studies, and Assignments to Presentations, Industrial

Visits, and Workshops – the journey of this passionate department still continues, with an only
aim of invoking a sense of “self-confidence”, “leadership”, and “professionalism”, in every
student. And all this would have never been possible without the active support of Dr. Vidhya
Srinivasan – Head of the Department and her zealous six member faculty team who mentor
the students in all their endeavors by conscientiously working behind the scenes and providing
them with the best training environment.
