Resources:

! Whiteboard and markers
! Printed Work Sheets

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, students will:
1. Have an understanding of the benefits of homework.
2. Have an understanding of the negative consequences of homework overloading.
3. Learn and be able to apply the 10-minute rule.

Set: 3-4 minutes

! Have the students discuss homework in groups of four or five.
o What they think of Mondays microteaching?
o Do they agree that there should be no homework?
o How much time do they think students should spend on homework?
o Do they think there are benefits to homework?
Students are to keep their comments for the end.
Main Body: 12 minutes

! First point: the benefits of homework
o Understanding the concepts
o Teaches time management
o Teaches discipline
o Teaches study skills that will be valuable in higher grades when content becomes
more difficult
! Show a video of a parent reading to a child (~1 minute) and continue with the benefits
of homework.
o Creates a conversation between parents, kids and teacher.
o Parent-child bonding
! Second point: negative consequences of homework overloading
o Show a video on what kids have to say about homework.
o It is not that kids and parents have problems with homework. It is homework
overload that is the problem.
o Teachers should be creative when giving homework. At this age homework
should be a fun activity for families.
! Third point: 10-minute rule
o In order to avoid overloading, Harris Cooper came up with the 10-minute rule
that has been largely accepted by the National Education Association and the
National Parent Teacher Association in the USA.

Sponge Activity

! If there is time before the end of the lesson we can incorporate the grocery list activity.
Four volunteers come to the front. Two of the volunteers are given a grocery list and the
other two play rock-paper-scissors. At the end, they are all asked to write as many items
as they can from the grocery list. They are given 30 seconds to do so. It is then explained
that this is a simulation of students who study and those that do not study before a test.

Closure: 3 minutes (questions and comments 2 minutes)

! We chose this topic because we strongly feel that getting rid of homework is going to
seriously affect our kids education.
! Summarize the benefits of homework.
! Encourage teachers to be creative when giving homework and to use the 10-minute
rule.
! Finish with questions and comments. Ask if students have changed their opinions
concerning homework for Grade 2 and under.

Assessment:

! We will include the class in the discussions.
! We will use a PowerPoint presentation to help students follow along.
! We will use videos to illustrate our points.

Self-Reflection:

! What went well?
! What can we change next time we give a similar lesson?
