Question 1 (10 Marks):

Three single-phase, 65 kVA, 4600 V/415 V transformers are connected together to form a
4600 V/415 V three-phase transformer bank. The equivalent impedance of each transformer
referred to its LV (secondary) side is (0.1 + j0.2) . The three-phase transformer bank delivers
100 kW three phase power at rated secondary voltage and at 0.7 lagging power factor.

(a) State clearly whether the single-phase windings should be connected in Star or Delta on the
HV and LV sides of the transformer.

The three-phase transformer is constructed of three single phase transformers.

The single-phase transformers are rated at 4600V/415V. This is the rated voltage across the
primary and secondary and are phase voltages of the single-phase transformer.
You are required con construct a 4600V/415V three phase transformer, and the three-phase
transformer rated primary line to line voltage should be 4600V and the transformer secondary
line to line voltage should be 415V.
In order to achieve this rating, the single-phase transformer primary and secondary winding
should be connected in Delta.

LV side connection = Delta

HV side connection = Delta

(b) Calculate the currents in the LV and HV windings

I HV , 10.36A
a 11.08

LV winding current = 114.74A

HV winding current = 10.36A

(c) Calculate the secondary referred primary line to line voltage and hence the actual primary line
to line voltage

V1 V2 ( Req jX eq ) I 2
I 2 I LV , cos 1
Here the voltages are line-to-line voltages and the currents are the delta-winding currents
V1 V2 ( Req jX eq ) I 2
I 2 I LV , cos 1 114.74 45.57 0
V1 41500 (0.1 j 0.2) 114.74 45.57 0
V1 439.51.020
To find the primary (HV-side ) line to line voltage, the above voltage magnitude needs to be
multiplied by the turns ratio:
V1 aV1 11.08 439.5 4869.7V
Secondary referred primary line to line voltage = 439.5 V

Primary line to line voltage = 4869.7 V

Question 2 (10 Marks)
A separately excited DC motor operates at its rated speed of 3800 rpm, armature terminal voltage of
250 V DC, field voltage of 100 V DC and an armature current of 30 A. The armature resistance is
known to be 1 . The rotational loss at this speed is given as 300 W.

(c) Calculate the armature terminal voltage required to run the motor at 50% of the rated speed and
under a shaft load of 50% of the rated power. Assume that the field winding supply remains
unchanged from its rated voltage, and the rotational losses scale linearly with speed.

Question 3 (10 Marks)
A star connected 415V / 50 Hz three phase squirrel cage induction motor has a rated speed of
920 rpm. At rated conditions, rotational losses are found to be 300 W and the rotor current (stator
referred) is found to be at 12 A.

(a) Calculate the slip of the motor and the electrical frequency of rotor currents under rated
conditions

What is the synchronous speed? At 50Hz excitation

for a 1 pole-pair motor, the synchronous speed is 3000 rpm,
for a 2 pole-pair motor, the synchronous speed is 1500 rpm,
for a 3 pole-pair motor, the synchronous speed is 1000 rpm
and 4 pole-pair motor, the synchronous speed is 750 rpm.

At rated conditions, the rotor speed is close to synchronous speed and the right answer is a 3 pole-
pair motor with synchronous speed 1000 rpm and is very obvious.

Therefore slip
