District: LAUSD

Subject: General Music
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Date of lesson: 10/22/15
Lesson Plan: No. 1
1. To understand the concept of beat through body percussion and speech rhythm.
2. To develop the understanding and recognition of moods in music related to the traditions of
Halloween
3. To experience descending melodic contour through singing and movement.
Procedures:
1. Introductions:
a. Music Teacher: Good Morning boys and girls!! How are you all doing on this
amazing day?
Music Teacher: As you can see by the seconds hand moving, it is keeping a steady beat while
keeping time. Music is all around us. What else that beats is either in us or in our environment.
Music teacher: Now, Lets keep clapping and play a little game. Lets go around the room and
introduce ourselves.
(By asking this question, I am hoping to get a response that tells me they know we are keeping
time or a beat and then once we figure it out, I will talk more about it.)
Music Teacher: Now let's move on with something much more fun. Can anyone tell me what
month we are on right now?
(Wait for students to raise hands, if no one wants to volunteer, ask more questions to elicit a
response)
Music Teacher: More specifically, what do we normally celebrate at the end of this month.
Music teacher: Yes! Thats Correct (Students name) It is almost Halloween! And what do we
do during Halloween (Might get a number of different responses like)
3. But most important of all, we tell each other ghost stories and go to a Halloween party
Music Teacher: But before we can go to the coolest Halloween party, we need to know more
about it so that we can enjoy and appreciate it better. Lets listen to some spooky music.
1. Tell a story using these pieces and use the music to help illustrate it.
6. Once done telling the stories, I will tell the class that It is time to go to the party but we need
to go take the bus.
Music Teacher: It is a little far away from here so we will have to take the bus. Want to get
ready!?
(Pretend as a class to be walking to the bus stop by having a classmate hold up print out across
the room of a bus stop sign)
(We all get in the bus by lining up behind the lines in front of the projector.)
Music Teacher: It will be a little while until we get to the party. Why dont we sing a song!
Music Teacher: Sounds like we are here! Lets get off the bus
(Everyone pretends to get off and we do the same thing we did earlier and pretend the party is
across the cassroom. As this is happening, one of my classmates will change the slide to a
Halloween party background and cue the song, The Monster Mash.)
Optional: Hand out percussion instruments so the students can play along with the beat of
the song
Music teacher: What did you learn today? Raise your hand.
Evaluation:
Extension:
1. Go more in depth into why the music sounds like Halloween in terms of dynamics, timbre,
instrumentation etc.
2. Have an activity where students get to create their own spooky sounds with instruments and
share with the class.
3. Sing other songs related to Halloween.
