f. Research the composer, the purpose for which the piece was written, and its
performance practice
i. This piece is a medley of two traditional spirituals arranged by Mark
Hayes. The first is the spiritual, Amazing Grace, that appeared in 1831. It
come from a collection entitled The Virginia harmony and the text was
written by John Newton in 1779. The second spiritual, Im New Born
Again, comes from a collection entitled Folk Songs of the American
Negro. Published in 1907, this and other songs were collected and
arranged by brothers John W. Work, Jt. And Frederick J. Work. These two
songs would originally be sung unaccompanied in a religious setting and
out in the labor fields among other settings. Another key element found in
these spirituals are the use of improper english both grammatically and
pronunciation because the slaves who originally sung them were not
literate.
