Week 2 Project: Middle school warm-up

Objective: Diction

Exercise #1:

Directions:

1. Ask students to stand up in a semi-circle around the piano.


2. Have class perform a quick vocal siren/sigh.
3. Remind students to sing with a nice open sound with jaw slightly lowered and
relaxed. Look around to make sure everyone is ready.
4. Demo for class, and give them starting pitches.
5. Begin and give feedback as appropriate.

Range: F3- D4

Minutes: 3 minutes

Exercise #2:

Directions:

1. Ask class to perform a vocal siren/sigh.


2. We will sing through this exercise using the five primary vowels while paying
attention to where the tip of the tongue meets the lower front teeth. Make sure to tell
class to keep facial and tongue muscles relaxed.
3. Demo and then have class sing.
4. Give starting pitches and begin.
5. Can have them use different articulation and dynamics (optional)
6. Give student feedback as necessary.

Vowels/Syllable Used: Five primary vowels: (na, ne, ni, no, nu). Can also incorporate
other consonances like m, s, p etc. to suit repertoire.
Range: C3- C4

Minutes: 3 minutes
