1. Introduction
In most business organizations the preparedness for emergency situations remain at handling minor
incidents only. The missing MH370 incident at Malaysian Airlines System (MAS) on March 8, 2014 has
come in as a great shock and exposed the helplessness and unpreparedness of MAS to handle
emergencies. In fact the incident has evolved into a major crisis and has not been resolved till today.
Both the local and the international community were aghast/shocked with the statements made by the
Malaysian authorities with regards to the missing plane that has caused the loss of 239 lives of both the
passengers and the technical crew on board.
MAS Flight MH 370 reported went missing on 8 march 2014 at 1.17 am when it veered off to Indian
Ocean from its intended flight path to Beijing. Witnesses claim the Boeing 777 fell off from the sky into
the Vietnam sea like a ball of fire. The official explanation was the aircraft made a left turn from its
intended flight path towards Indian Ocean and then went missing . The controversy remains unresolved
to this day. Many quarters claim its a conspiracy between the Malaysian government and the US
Government.

In their public statement, the authorities categorically claimed that MH370 that was bound to Beijing,
China from KLIA Kuala Lumpur made a left turn from its intended flight path towards Indian Ocean at
1.17 am just before crossing over into Vietnam Airspace. After which it was claimed by department of
civil aviation that the ground control lost radio and radar contact of the plane. Since then, neither the
plane nor the bodies of the people have been discovered till today.

Many theories and speculations evolved literally confusing the victim families, the local community and
the international communities. The Malaysian authorities responses to queries from the public and
media were very disturbing and not convincing. Time taken to respond to queries were rather too slow.
MAS and the authorities were never able to live to the expectations of the moaning public. They
spanned their way out of the crisis by giving irrational excuses and bought time to orchestrate and
substantiate their claim by making the world believe that the MH370 flight ended in the Indian Ocean.
But the world, neither the local community nor the international community has believed the
unfounded claim made by the Malaysian authorities.

2. Observations on Stakeholders (both internal and external) response:

The speculative theories that evolved and the statement claimed by Malaysian authorities.

MH 370 went missing en-route to Beijing, China from KLIA on 8/3/2014.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing what looked like a ball of fire falling from the sky into
the sea off the coast of Vietnam.

Malaysian authorities reported on the 2nd day that the plane made a left turn
towards the Indian ocean before losing radio and radar contact at 1.17 am.

Families and some media claim a cover-up and conspiracy

MAS goes through a harrowing period , aggravated by the missing plane. Till today
the missing plane is a mystery.

Too many theories and speculations have evolved over the missing plane.

On the 2nd day the authorities categorically claimed that the MH370 turned left
from its intended flight and headed towards the Indian Ocean. Why then the search
and rescue operations was continued off the coast of Vietnam for the succeeding six
(6) days.

The radar flight path of MH370 captured by the Military radars of both Malaysian
military and neighbouring countries military radar were not brought to public
attention. Details were suppressed and authorities claimed that the Malaysian
military radar was under-performing due to old age.
MAS flight follow operations (24 hrs operations centre) never realized that MH 370
was missing from 1.17 am until about 6.30 am in the morning, when Beijing control
called up to check on the whereabouts of MH370.
In September 2013, an FAA sent a notice from US to all global operators of B777
indicating of aircraft structural problem that needs immediate attention to all B777
fleets to rectify if any of the aircraft operated by them experienced a similar
situation. Did MAS respond to the notice?
Boeing aircraft manufacturer from US were non-committal from day one of the
incident. They were not coming forth to diffuse the crisis situation. They were in a
withdrawal symptom and never played an active role in the clarification of missing
MH370.
Vietnam who was a critical airspace coordinator between KL FIR and Beijing FIR in
MH370 episode observed complete silence over the missing plane.
Why MAS did not have a structured Crisis management Team responding to both
domestic and international communities queries and anxieties?

The communications episode during the initial stage of crisis:

MAS was not the primary source of information on the first night. MAS 24 hours
flight operations centre never released any flight information on MH370 at the
onset of the crisis.

The CEO of MAS airline did not respond quickly to public shock and anxiety.

Failure by authorities to deal with circulating conspiracy theories fuelled suspicions.

Inconsistent media reports from global quarters have gone viral.

Information released by authorities were found to be inconsistent and the dots for
connecting to establish the fact were sadly misguided. Till today many are confused
about the whereabouts of MH370.

Internet Based information:

In September 2013 there was a directive from FAA (Federal Aviation Authority 0f United States) to all
global Boeing 777 operators including Malaysian Airline System that all their B777 fleets should undergo
immediate maintenance check to ascertain any structural defect on the aircraft body.
The directive is as follows:
Issued 5 March 2014 and effective 9 April, the AD required repetitive inspections of the installation and
fuselage skin to assess whether a 16-inch crack found in an unnamed airlines 777 was a one off. The
FAA warned that cracking and corrosion in the fuselage skin, if not corrected, could lead to rapid
decompression and loss of structural integrity of the airplane. The corrosion was due to a braided wire
bonding jumper having insufficient clearance from the skin. The jumper wore into the skin; the skin
corroded and a crack occurred.

The FAA first proposed the additional inspections for 120 U.S.-registered aircraft in September
2013 before finalizing the directive in February 2014 and then publishing them in the U.S.
Federal Register on March 5. The new rule takes effect April 9. "We are issuing this
airworthiness directive to detect and correct cracking and corrosion in the fuselage skin, which
could lead to rapid decompression and loss of structural integrity of the airplane," the agency
said in the directive.
