A new project development in Bangladesh
Course Name: Project Management
Mission:
Set up small independent power plants in rural areas of Bangladesh using rice husk as fuel.
Vision:
Provide affordable, reliable and environmentally sustainable energy to rural areas in Bangladesh
and in the process also generate more income for rice farmers.
Business Objectives:
Rice husk is the most prolific agricultural residue in rice producing countries around the world.
Rice husk, which consists mainly of lingo-cellulose and silica, is not utilized to any significant
extent and has great potential as an energy source.
Biomass Power Solutions aims to provide electricity to 15,000 energy deprived houses across the
country to over 10 to 12 villages by installing 10 plants within 5 Years from the start of 1st
Plant.
AS Dr. Haefele said,Rice residues can produce bio energy and at the same time reduce the
negative effects of rice production systems on the environment; they could also be a source of
extra income for farmers,.
To increase earnings of farmers by selling the rice husk, mustard Husk/Stem, Corn Cob etc to
Biomass Power Solutions.
Create employment 32 persons of 10 plants.
Social problems:
Sixty percent of rural households do not have access to electricity as distributed by the
govornment.
Shortage of electricity is affecting the development prospects of the country. The
electricity crisis has been identified as the Social Darkness of rural Bangladesh!
Most rural pepole are using diesel based generators to generate electricity for which the
country is loosing huge foreign currency due to the importing of fuel from abroad.
Diesel generators create environmental pollution.
Location:
Population is increasing but the generation of electricity is not increasing as expected. Only 49
percent of the countrys population has access to electricity, which is very low compared to other
developing countries in the world. The per capita generation is 236 KWH (Ministry of Power,
Energy and mineral resources; Access on 23-11-2011). It is quite evident that the extensive
dependence on electricity has put us under a strong challenge. For years, the matter of balancing
the supply against the demand for electricity has remained largely an unresolved matter.
Here Pilot Project Location will be in the Faridpur District of Bangladesh.
Functions of Plant:
Power plants will be installed where there is a reliable source of rice husk within a
distance of 10 (Ten) kilometers.
Tonnes of rice husk will be poured into the gasifier hopper to convert rice husks into
biomass which will be burned to produce energy rich gas.
This gas will pass through a series of filters which will purify it.
It will be used as fuel for engine to drive electricity generators.
Electricity will be distributed to customers via insulated overhead cables attached to bamboo
poles or any other cost efective poles.
Service provided:
Basic Supply Package will include electricity to light two 10 Watt LED Lights
2 Mobile Charger Connection(Additional Connections can be taken up on extra
cost basis)
Target Customer:
Off-grid villages in Bangladesh where most inhabitants are dependent on agriculture for their
subsistence.
Examples & similar project in India:
Similar electricity generating-rice husk plants exists in India. In Bihar, one of the poorest states
in India, 85 percent of people are not connected to the electricity grid. Households use kerosene
lamps when they can afford it, and businesses use expensive and dirty diesel generators. Some
view this energy poverty as a development problem. Others view it as an environmental
problem. The founders of Bihar-based Husk Power Systems view it as an opportunity to build a
social enterprise. The company realized that one waste product in Bihar rice husks could be
used to power a small biomass gasifier. Along with rice husks, they also use mustard stems,
corncobs, grasses, and other agricultural residue. After five months of R&D, they developed
a 32-kW system by burning 50 kilograms of rice husk per hour. In the last four years, theyve
installed over 80 biomass mini-plants across Bihar, bringing power to more than 32,000 rural
households.
Social Impact:
Capacity building and economic development of rural areas and villages through
expenditure reduction, employment generation and pollution reduction.
Reduce environmental pollution. Kerosene savings will cut greenhouse gas emissions
by an estimated 75 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
Having a reliable electricity supply will make families feel more settled and
connected to the wider world.
Biomass Power Solutions aims to provide electricity to 15,000 people energy
deprived houses across the country.
Kerosene expense will be cut by 4 to 5 litres per month saving about Tk. 350 per
month.
Conclusion:
The benefits of using rice husk technology are numerous. Primarily, it provides electricity and
serves as a way to dispose of agricultural waste. In addition, steam, a byproduct of power
generation, can be used for paddy drying applications, thereby increasing local incomes and
reducing the need to import fossil fuels. Husk will also have to address the persistent
misconception that people at the bottom of the pyramid are not willing to pay for electricity and
prove that there is reliable demand for their product.
