SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL LESSON PLAN

Name of Teacher Pablo A. Ragay Jr. Grade/Year Level Grade XI

Learning Area: General Biology Quarter: 1 Module: 1
Competency: Describe how genetic recombination results to variations among individuals.
Lesson no. 1 Heredity and Variation among Individuals Duration (minutes/hours): 1 hour

Key
Understandings to Everyone is a unique individual.
be developed Recombination of genes will result in the formation of unique individuals.

Learning Knowledge Identify the variation of physical traits an individual has inherited from his/her parents;
Objectives
Skills Demonstrate how recombination of genes will result in the formation of unique individuals;
Attitude Share their insights on the importance of variations among individuals;
Resources Needed Title Banner, Illustrations, Chart, Paper, Pens/Pencil, Worksheets

minutes) Checking of Attendance
Review of Past Lesson
Ask: Do you see anyone who looks exactly like you? Do you look different from your brother
or sister? Do you look more like your mother or father?
Activity (10 Paired-Activity: Ask the students to work in pairs and determine whether or not they
minutes) possess these hereditary traits and they are going to tabulate their results on a table form.
They are going to examine the following characteristics from you and your partner. Tabulate
the result.
A. Free Earlobe
The earlobe hangs freely below the point of attachment to the head
B. Tongue-Rolling
Ability to roll your tongue into a U-shape
C. Widows Peak
The midpoint of the hairline along the front of the forehead points
downward
D. Cleft chin
The center of the chin has an indentation resembling a deep dimple
E. Bent little finger
The little finger is bent toward the ring finger
F. Mid-digital hair
Hair is present in the middle section of any of the fingers

Analysis (5 Say: Explain the results of your activity. (Call 1 or 2 students to answer each of the following
minutes) questions.)
1. Do you have similar and different characteristics from your partner?
2. Do you see anyone exactly like you?
3. Why do you think all of us are unique from each other? What do you think is
responsible for these unique traits?

Presentation Abstraction Define Variation

(15 minutes)
Variation: Differences are brought about by the many combinations of characteristics.
Ask: What is the carrier of hereditary traits?
Genes: the functional unit of inheritance controlling the
transmission of and expression of one or more traits
Teacher Input: Show visual aids
Review about Meiosis which is responsible for the production of gametes or sex cells.

Discuss how an individual gets a diploid number (48) of chromosomes when the sex cells
only have haploid number (23) of chromosomes.

23 chromosomes 23 chromosomes

46 chromosomes

Introduce the following vocabulary in terms of expression of genes:

An individual with two identical alleles for a gene is homozygous for that gene. An
individual with two different alleles is heterozygous. When we say allele, these are genes
that are members of the same gene pair. The genotype describes the organisms alleles,
and the phenotype describes the outward expression of an allele combination.
Traits appearing in the first generation are called dominant and traits that did not appear in
the first generation but appeared in a few plants of the second generation are called
recessive.
Practice Application Say: We are going to create a kid using the phenotype and genotype list given.
(20 minutes)
Each one will be givin a colored paper with their names on it to identify their group. The
class will be divided into three groups.

Instruction:
Flip 2 coins to determine the phenotype. Head (HH,Hh) is the dominant gene. Tail (hh) is the
recessive gene. Create your own child based on the tossed coin then draw its picture on the
manila paper.

The activity will be done for ten minutes. Group presentation will be given 5 minutes to
explain their work.

(Presentation of drawing per group)

Group 1, present your work.

Group 2, present your work.
Group 3, present your work.

Ask:
How can you distinguish a dominant gene from a recessive gene?
Differentiate between phenotype and genotype.
Why is it that the kind of child that your group created was different from that of the
other group?
