British values and extremism
British values: Democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance for those (see Equality Act
2010) with different faiths and beliefs.

Extremism: vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values and calls for the death of members of British armed
forces.

Responsability
Staff (and members of support staff with an institutional partner or sub-contractor) have to undertake Prevent duty
training, understand the risk of radicalisation, implement the Duty effectively and know how to refer an individual who is
vulnerable within your organisation, also sharing information about vulnerable individuals.

OFSTED Guidance
Leadership and management:
How to foster greater understanding of and respect for people with protected characteristics and how staff are protected;
how to prepare students for life in modern Britain; the effectiveness of Safeguarding practice.

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment:

Promote equality, raise awareness of diversity, staff are aware of and plan for individual students' diverse needs;
teaching promotes learners' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Personal development, behaviour and welfare of learners:

How well learners know how to protect themselves and how well they understand the risks; how well learners know how
to keep themselves fit and healthy; the extent to which learners feel and are safe and have a good understanding of how
they can raise concerns if they do not feel safe; learners' understanding of their rights and responsibilities.

Risk assessment
Safeguarding, effective communication, external speakers, staff, student, volunteer and board members training and
knowledge of the Prevent duty, freedom of expression.
Risk assessment could also include physical and emotional wellbeing of learners and all the staff.

4/5/2017 22:20
Policies
Charities and fund raising policy (funds only go to charity commission registered charities), whistle blowing and
complaints policies (appropriate, fair and open ), prayer room and chaplaincy policy (policies and protocols), letting of
provider premises policies (external lettings do not present an opportunity for a safeguarding or extremist threat).

extremism.

I think that the main reason of vulnerability is a serie of traumatic (personal) events. Then being rejected by peer, faith or
social group/family and recent religious conversion.

Implementing British values
Training to all the staff, policies reviewed, formal and informal curriculum implementing British values to support students
in
resisting extremism while developing their political views, clear agreed referral channels, fluid communications with local
Prevent coordinators.

Expectations
I would refer in the first instance to the Safeguarding officer.

Case studies
a) Report what other students have told them about George's online statements to the designated Safeguarding officer.

The Safeguarding team or officer will assess the information and if they feel that there is a risk of radicalisation, they
should seek guidance from their local Prevent FE/HE Coordinator or the local Prevent team.

If they decide he is vulnerable he would be referred to Channel through a police, FE or local authority Prevent
Coordinator.
Additional support may be needed.

b) Similarly with the case study b), talking about the desire to go to a cnflict zone to fight 'the enemy' should be referred
to the Safeguarding officer.

g) I cannot promise confidentiality, I have to refer to the Safeguarding team or officer who will assess the information.

Then they should seek guidance from their local Prevent FE/HE Coordinator or the local Prevent team.
