Objective of Project: (Requirements)

The objective of this project is to visually demonstrate virtual factory

named Dhomne Krishi Seva Kendra (in Marathi language) ( Dhomane Agro
Services Centre in English ) using VRML capabilities. This small scale factory
consists of three Machines as under
1) Vardan Grader (used for grading of grains like low, medium and high
quality)
2) Vardan Gravity Separator (Used for grain cleaning and grading on basis of
specific weight of grain https://youtu.be/dQ_jonV618c
3) Vardan Destoner (used for removing stones from grain)

Every machine is preceded by a bucket elevator. (Vardan is Marathi

language word means blessing. Here it stands for blessing to poor farmers
of India).
To get the feel of entire VRML capabilities, I have decided to include all
VRML tools available. My previous project was lacking certain
functionalities like sound, sensors, environment etc. which I want to include
in this project. My basic objective is that user should get the feel of visiting
real factory in Virtual environment. By using sensors, I want to enhance
interactivity. The projects of VRML I have undertaken up till now were
having hardly any interactivity (I am talking about Virtual Theory of Machine
Lab. Please refer this YouTube link for details
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZoiLrdhJvM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPWwZlJ65Uo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ybiKmLP1A4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWBKwL7ixJ8&t=154s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qgi0DoVJfQ
). In virtual Theory of Machine Lab, the mechanisms are playing in a loop and user
have hardly any control over the things. This project (Virtual Theory of Machine
Lab) actually lacks interactivity.

Work done so far:

The first step for such project is to make 3D models and assemblies of machines
involved in scene. These machines are manufactured by my teacher Prof. Sanjay
K. Patil having small manufacturing unit located in phase 4 MIDC, of Akola. The
detail address and contact details are as follows.

Since all the machines involves mostly sheet metal work, therefore lots of production
2D drawings were available with proper dimensions for solid modelling. Certain
standard parts were modelled using reverse engineering techniques. I have

modelled each and every possible component using commercially available

packages AutoCAD and Pro/E. Then assemblies were made using components in
AutoCAD and Pro/E. These assemblies were taken to 3ds Max studio for graphical
simulation. Using 3ds Max studio required motion to the machines were provided.

The beauty of 3ds Max studio is that it can export the entire simulation in
VRML. Once we get VRML file, it can be opened in any browser like Internet
Explorer, Chrome, Opera etc. independent of origin software like AutoCAD, 3DS
Max Studio or Pro/E.

VRML have its own advantages like scalability, Interactivity, light weight files
sizes and ease of modification using a simple text editor like notepad.

Work to be completed or pending work

I am supposed to build environment in and outside the virtual factory. This virtual
environment will contain sky, chopper in sky, grass and garden, water fountain,
trees, rose bushes, roses, butterflies, birds flying in sky, vehicles passing nearby
factory etc. along with spatial and ambient sound.

I am also expecting a factory shed (typical factory with trusses and corrugated
sheets) with rolling shutters for the entry.

I want to achieve following objectives

1) Avatar: I want that avatar (Digital Man) should welcome guest entering
factory in typical Indian style by bowing down and saying Namaste
(Welcome). I have located one such avatar from web3d consortium.
2) Proximity sensor: Proximity sensors should take rolling shutters up as
soon as one reaches close to entry.
3) Touch sensor: The factory will obviously have lights and celling Fan/ exhaust
fan. I want to provide one switch board at the entry (inside factory near entry)
to operate (on/off) lights and fan. Touch sensor will be the best choice for this
objective. The real factory has push to on / push to off electric starters
mounted on one back side of machines. I am expecting three such starters
(closely mounted) on walls to start/stop machine. (Each starter will start/stop
one set of machine and bucket elevator).

4) View point arrows: As there is a fixed sequence of operation, the user

should be guided to every machine sequentially. I am planning to put
direction arrow which will take me to proper view point in a sequence. The
sequence should be like this
a) Bucket elevator 1
b) Vardan Grader Machine
c) Bucket Elevator 2
d) Gravity Separator
e) Bucket elevator 3
f) Destoner.
5) String sensor: My virtual factory should contain one board to write
instructions for workers, daily grain processing rates, holiday notices etc. I am
planning to have one board with string sensor (which can sense keyboard
inputs in real time) thereby one should be able to write instructions on board
in real time. Please refer file *.wrl
6) Plane sensor: My virtual agro machine factory have sliding windows which
is best suited for plane sensor. My intension is that user should be able to slide
window to see outside. Windows will give me opportunity to show
semitransparent glass in virtual environment.
7) Fog: The outside garden will be best site to show this element of VRML. The
only thing is that fog effect should be prominent so that the user experiencing
this fog should be able to realize this effect on his own.
8) Introducing spatial and ambient sound in the virtual environment: My
objective is to introduce spatial and ambient sound in the factory. Once, the
machines started, it will definitely make noise (actually these machines are
making lot of noise). My objective is to develop spherical envelop (invisible)
for every machine so as to distinguish sound. I want to assign four different
sound (with slight similarity) to every machine. I am planning to attach *.wav
files for this purpose. The sound intensity should grow as user will approach
near machine. All the three bucket elevators should have same *.wav file. As
this factory is situated along highway side, I want that some ambient sound
should come continuously with low intensity (traffic sound, typical truck and
bus sound will be best for this purpose).
9) Wall clock showing system time: I have intension to show computer system
time/ PC time on analog clock on wall of factory. Time sensor is best for this

purpose. This clock will always reflect computer system time on which this
VRML file will be opened.
10) LOD (Level of detail) : This will enable optimization of vrml file . As
soon as user will approach some object, its details will be visible.
11) Texture mapping: Appropriate texture should be given to walls, floor,
roof so as to produce realistic effect. Photographs will be helpful in this case.
12) Billboard, Anchor and inline nodes can be introduced as per your
discretion.
13) Do not forget to attach *.jpg file of flex board outside the factory
(please crop and optimize)
14) Color sensor: This can be used to show outlines for visitors prohibiting
close approach to machine.
15) In short I want to make use of all vrml helpers available in 3Ds Max
studio as follows in my virtual factory.

Software tools to be used/ suggested: I would like to suggest VIVATY

STUDIO (Freeware/Shareware software) for this purpose. VIVATY STUDIO is
best for creating virtual words and combining files. It is just a matter of inserting
*.wrl file in the existing file and place it proper position. We can scale and
position an object as per our requirement. Another software/tool which can be
used is BS Contact Editor. There are many other tools available at
http://www.web3d.org/x3d/content/examples/X3dResources.html#Applications

Project related important question and answers

1) why I am insisting on VRML instead of UNITY3D/blender or X3D?

I want to control *.wrl file using MATLAB Simulink software. MATLAB Simulink
provides support to only *.wrl files as per my knowledge. I want to establish
control using MATLABs Virtual reality tool box. I havent seen any other format
except *.wrl supported by MATLAB.

2) Which plugin I am (preferring) using to view *.wrl files ?

I am using BS contact player (freeware) to view *.wrl files.

3) Have I carried out any project on VRML?
Yes, I have carried out some projects on VRML. Here are some references

4) Can we use VRML helpers available in 3dsmax studio directly?
Yes, we can use VRML helpers available in 3ds Max studio directly. But I am
facing certain difficulties/issue in this as I am not a regular user of 3ds max
studio. Here is a snapshot of VRML helpers.
