For their senior project, the members of Aquilon have decided to improve upon the perfor-

mance of the F18 catamaran class. The team wants to equip an F18 catamaran with a
wingsail and a hydrofoil system (a first for the F18 class!) so as to increase its maximum
speed, and to beat an unmodified catamaran of the same class on an olympic course. Simi-
lar systems have been already developed for catamarans in other classes. It must be said
however that those projects had teams of engineers with almost unlimited budgets. As
stated before, this class of catamaran has NEVER been equipped with both a hydrofoil
system AND a wingsail. The Aquilon team intends to achieve this with a limited budget to
demonstrate Canadas expertise in engineering.

Our team is made up of 10 students in mechanical engineering at the University of Sher-

brooke. The team is composed of students with various and sundry skills. The internship
done by each student has given him skills in project management and manufacturing
design. These skills complement those acquired in the classroom. Aquilon is a team made
up of expert sailors as well as beginners. This gives the team a rich knowledge of experi-
ence and a constant desire to learn more about the subject. Excellent teamwork has
created a team that is both dynamic and performance driven.
