Protectingtheenvironment
We are in trouble! Almost every day we seem to hear of yet another problem affecting the
environment.Weshouldbeconcernedaboutthestateoftheplanetintermsofitsenergysuppliesand
changing climate. The clear message being broadcast by all responsible governments is that every
personhasaparttoplayinaddressingtheseissues.AccordingtotheEnvironmentalProtectionAgency,
youcanprotecttheenvironmentby:preventingpollution,recyclingmaterials,lookingafterreservesof
waterandconservingenergy.

Every one of us, whatever age we are can do something to help slow down and reverse some of the
damage.Wecannotleavetheproblemsolvingentirelytotheexpertsweallhavearesponsibilityfor
ourenvironment.Wemustlearntoliveinasustainablewayi.e.learntouseournaturalresourceswhich
include air, freshwater, forests, wildlife, farmland and seas without damaging them. As populations
growandlifestyleschange,wemustkeeptheworldinagoodconditionsothatfuturegenerationswill

The opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2010, which kick started the twelve days sport

were simply moved by the richness and prosperity of the Indian culture that was all put together to

Silent.Weak.Slow.Unfortunate.Thesewerethewordsthrownatmebymyteacherinpreschoolduring
mynurseryyears.ShetoldmyparentsthatIhadnowayofpassingandgettingintoagoodschooland
startattendingkindergarten.Icouldevenstillvividlyrememberhershorthair,roundface,chinitaeyes
andhoarsevoice,angrilylookingandshoutingatme.Indeed,Iwasadepressedandanillfatedchild,
butthroughmyparentsloveandsupport,theycontinuedtoencouragemetostudyharderandprove
everyonewrong,thatIwasnottobesteppedon;thatIwoulddowellinmystudies.

Aftertakingnursery,Itooktheentranceexamintheschoolmyparentswishedmetoattend,UnoHigh
School.IbelievethattakingthattestwassodreadfulthatIcouldnotevenrememberwhatIwasdoing
atthattime.Fortunately,throughtheworksofGod,Iwasabletopasstheexam.Althoughmymother
wasalittlehesitantatfirsttoletmestudytherebecauseshewasworriedthatIwouldnotbeableto
survivethehardshipinstudyinginthatschool,myfathertrustedme,onehundredandonepercent,and
thus, I entered the school with fear, yet with great determination. At that point in time, I had set my
goal:crushthepainfulwordsofmyteacher,andleteveryonewatchandlearn.Ihadputmyheartintoit
anddecidedtotakethechallenge.Istudiedtodeath,seriouslyansweredtheexercises,seatworkand
homework,andsleptlateatnightwithmymotherasmytutor,butIhadnoconfidenceinmyself.Even
with the motivation my parents have always given me, I never trusted myself, my strengths, and
abilities.

Great opportunities are often disguised as impossible circumstances in life. Moving forward to my
kindergarten graduation day, my family attended the event to see my very first and special two time
walkonstagetoreceivemyEnglishandChinesediplomas,whichwastrulyagoodachievementdespite
otherpeoplesbadimpressionofmewithmystudies.Beyondmyfamilysexpectationsandimagination,
Ididnotonlygetuponstagetwice,butforfourtimes!OnewastoreceivemyEnglishdiploma,Chinese
diploma, Most Responsible Student certificate and Best in Filipino award. Moreover, I was one of
thetopstudentsinourbatch.Astonishingly,Ididnotonlybreakthecursemyteacherchantedandgive
my parents pride, but I also gained so much selfconfidence and determination from that time to
accomplishmoreandearnintegritywithperseverance,disciplineandgratitude.

Inthebeginning,althoughahugerockstumbledacrossmypath,Iwasstillabletowithstanditandsee
the silver lining with my faith in God, parents guidance and hard work. Beyond doubt, this fairy tale
storylike,onceuponatimehappenedanunfortunateeventturnedintoahappilyeverafterending,was
not only a memorable, but also a very remarkable experience from my pigtail years with the
achievementsIhavegatheredandthelessonsIhavelearnedthatIwouldalwaysbegladtonarrateto
everyone, stand as an inspiration and motivation, and tell them that nothing is impossible. Just when
youthinkyoucantdoit,doit!
