Presentation

By: Morgan Maugans

Date: April 12, 2017
Where: Rothman Institute
Who: Dr. Frederick
Who is he?

He is the Associate Director of Sports Medicine at

Rothman Institute and the Assistant Professor of
Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University.
For the 1996 Olympics he was the Director of Athletic Care
and in the 2004 Olympics he was apart of the US Olympic
Medical Team.
He is the Assistant Team Physician for the Philadelphia
Phillies, Saint Josephs University, and the Philadelphia
Flyers.
All about being an
Orthopaedic Surgeon...

This job entails four years of pre-medical school, four

years of medical school, 1-2 year internship, 4-5 year
residency, and 1-2 year fellowship.
The minimum salary is $315,000 and the maximum salary
is $700,000 per year.
An Orthopaedic Surgeon is someone who treats,
diagnoses, and performs surgery on the musculoskeletal
system.
Why did I choose this?

I wanted to job shadow him due to the fact that I am

interested in the medical field and want to study to
become a doctor or surgeon in University,
I decided to job shadow Dr. Frederick because he is a
wellknown orthopaedic surgeon, and has a lot of
experience.
I was able to job shadow him because I was introduced to
him from another doctor I have previously job shadowed
in the past.
What happened
throughout?

Dr. Frederick is the head doctor in the area that I was working
with him at. He had three nurses that worked under him and
had a fifth year resident he was teaching.
In five years I would still be in medical school so I would not
be able to have a role in working there. In ten to fifteen years I
would be able to work as an intern or resident at Rothman if I
decided to study Orthopaedics.
He gave me the insight that it is important to realize that you
cant help everyone because some people have such serious
conditions that nothing will help them.
What did he do?

After his resident met with the patient he met with them
next. He made them give a description of how they were
feeling and where they were having pain. He evaluated
people that were post-op, pre-op, or were deciding on
whether or not they wanted to get surgery. He looked at
their x-rays or their ultrasound pictures. Also he tested
their range of motion. After that he performed any
procedures such as injections, cleaning stitches, taking out
fluid, or re-wrapping any bandages.
What did I do throughout?

I helped with evaluating x-rays and ultrasound pictures,

wrapping any wounds, cleaning any wounds or stitches,
numbing any areas that were getting injected, performing
injections, taking out excess fluid or blood behind the
patella, stopping the bleeding of areas after injections, and
helping any patients get up or move if they were unable to.
What is the Environment?

Rothman Institute is a very clean and pristine place and

everything in each section is the same and all of the offices
are set up the exact same way.
Throughout the entire day everyone is busy with the
patients or working on their own studies.
I would not see myself working in an office, I would prefer
to work at a hospital because it is more hands on I would
perform operations. I would work in an office though if I
was doing research or a study.
What is the Environment?
(continued)
We saw over fifteen patients, and that was considered to
be a slow day.
We were unable to sit for over 5-6 hours because we had
to meet with the patients as quick as possible.
I job shadowed for 10 hours.
There is a lot of patients that are not friendly or happy
because they are in pain.
What happened at the end
of the day?
The day doesnt end until all patients were seen or treated.
After that he recorded what happened with each patient,
made any phone calls, or scheduled any procedures with
the hospital. He doesnt have to follow up with anyone but
the people working under him have to follow up with him
after they are done.
Yes this he is a good contact for me because he teaches at
Jefferson, and can get me into surgery with him.
Could I see this job as my
future?
No I could not see myself doing this job because I do not
want to work in an office. Also because I dont want to
study Orthopaedics when I am older. I want to study
neonatology.
