MAKING A MODEL CAR

Unit Name: Geared and charged (term 2)

Title: MAKING A MODEL CAR

Name:

Year Level: 8 Subject: Science

Due: 1st June 2017

Assessment Task Cover Sheet 8/06/2017 V2

Task Outline:
You have been commissioned by Ford Motors Australia to design and Model a car that
runs on renewable energy

Task Description:
You need to design and construct a toy car that runs on a renewable energy resource. The
budget allocated for making this car CANNOT exceed $20. Please try to be as creative as
possible and use recycled materials when possible.

Final submission should include:

Brainstorm
Background research
Design drawing
Budget sheet
Model of the car
Please self-mark your work and submit a reflection (10-12 sentences) along with the final
task.

Background research (remember to include foot notes and a bibliography):

PE= M x G x H = Mass, Gravity, Height

The energy transfer would be electric energy to kinetic energy.
There is battery powered cars, there are rubber band powered cars and solar powered cars.
In each case, each car has kinetic energy K, it can be produced by fossil fuel which pushes the car
which uses kinetic energy and involves elastic potential energy.
Elastic Potential Energy Gravitational potential energy - kinetic energy.

Brain storm of idea (this can be done on paper but take picture and add to this section):

What I need to have:

Popsicles
Super glue
Plastic bottle
Sticks
Screw drivers to make holes
Bottle caps
Solar power cells are too
expensive.
Maybe some type of batman
car,
Maybe it can be relevant to a
real-life car.
I can get a few random parts
from cars to make my final car
and I could have a solar system
which generates power from
light.
I can buy a car and work on it!
The cost of all items shouldnt
accede 20 dollars.
Budget might be too low?
The car must be recycled and must use recycled materials to keep a low budget and to
have a solar generated energy car. It must have or state that it has or is solar powered.
Have a propeller at the back which propels the car forward.

Design drawing (this can be done on paper but take picture and add to this section):

These both
are tires,
other 2 as Motor and fan
well

This Car, I bought trying to find a dc motor, luckily there was two in there. I took
both of them out and used and implemented them in my car..

It changed to this:

Reflection (10-12 sentences):

Throughout my project was a hefty journey, I started off having no idea of what to do
and ended up with a headache. I gave up for two weeks, after that I started to consider
different YouTube videos and how they made the cars. I was bamboozled on how hard
it was to make a car! I started off by buying a car from Toys R us and bought a car.
Inside I found 2 dc motors and batteries. I went out and bought a few things, batteries
etc. which is all in the budget sheet. I kept on trying and trying until a point where my
brain was neutral. All I could think about would be how hard this is to make this car. At
the end, I glued together a switch with the battery and motor, made a fan and got the
car to spin. It was good enough and I had no more hope to try to make it go 3 metres
etc. To improve my car and make it move I can or could have changed the tires and
added better ones.
