Within Abraham Lincolns persuasive piece entitled The Gettysburg Address regarding
civilians and military alike after the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War, he shifts from a
reverent perspective to a call for action to be dedicated here (line 13) by motivating the
union to pursue and continue the war in order to reunite the country and preserve the nations
Abraham Lincoln unifies the people in order to drive them to continue fighting in the
war and unify the nation. He uses an effective epiphora to create an overall motivational and
empowering feeling at the end of his speech by giving the audience a sense of importance with
the idea that the government is of the people, by the people, for the people (line 18) in terms
of why it was created. While the words of...by... for (line 18) mean different things in regards
to how it precedes the noun that follows , Lincoln suggests that they are all closely related by
repeating the word people after each phrase. As Lincoln places the prepositions with similar
qualities before each noun, he explains the different ways the government and the people are
connected. By accomplishing this, each person in the audience is acknowledged and given the
implication that they are all necessary to hold up something so strong, so complex, and so
important as the government giving them purpose and making them feel important and valued.
Lincoln develops an emotional appeal in the audience as he implies that the people are the
foundation of the system that protects their rights igniting both feelings of gratitude and the
need to protect it. With the knowledge that there are other people defending their nation for
the same cause, a feeling of togetherness is created making the people a stronger force with an
empowerment to take on anything. While giving the audience an incentive to fight back, Lincoln
also creates a sense of urgency by speeding up the sentence and building up the energy of his
statement using asyndeton by omitting the conjunctions and repeating the word people at
the end of each clause. As energy and enthusiasm are ignited , the people are given the ability
to have a strong comeback that will help them to win the war.
As Lincoln unifies the people, he helps to reunite the country. By doing so, he
accomplishes the goal of preserving the founding principles of our nation creating a ripple
effect throughout the world and impacting the way people view the idea of true freedom.
