Whatisacollocation?
Acollocationistwoormorewordsthatoftengotogether.Thesecombinationsjustsound
"right"tonativeEnglishspeakers,whousethemallthetime.Ontheotherhand,other
combinationsmaybeunnaturalandjustsound"wrong".Lookattheseexamples:

Whylearncollocations?
Yourlanguagewillbemorenaturalandmoreeasilyunderstood.
Youwillhavealternativeandricherwaysofexpressingyourself.
Itiseasierforourbrainstorememberanduselanguageinchunksorblocksratherthan
assinglewords.

Howtolearncollocations
Beawareofcollocations,andtrytorecognizethemwhenyouseeorhearthem.
Treatcollocationsassingleblocksoflanguage.Thinkofthemasindividualblocksor
chunks,andlearnstronglysupport,notstrongly+support.
Whenyoulearnanewword,writedownotherwordsthatcollocatewithit(remember
rightly,rememberdistinctly,remembervaguely,remembervividly).
Readasmuchaspossible.Readingisanexcellentwaytolearnvocabularyand
collocationsincontextandnaturally.
Revisewhatyoulearnregularly.Practiseusingnewcollocationsincontextassoonas
possibleafterlearningthem.
Learncollocationsingroupsthatworkforyou.Youcouldlearnthembytopic(time,
number,weather,money,family)orbyaparticularword(takeaction,takeachance,
takeanexam).
Youcanfindinformationoncollocationsinanygoodlearner'sdictionary.Andyoucan
alsofindspecializeddictionariesofcollocations.
