FACULTY OF ENGINEERING
Course Description:
Introduction to common civil engineering materials used in construction. It discusses the performance of the
construction materials, the composition, engineering behaviours, manufacturing process, properties that affect
their performance and how they are used in construction.
Course Objectives:
1. Students will develop an understanding of the basic knowledge of Civil Engineering materials which are
most commonly used in Civil Engineering construction.
2. To assist them to understand the physical and mechanical properties of construction materials,
fabrication or method of manufacture and its application in construction industry.
3. Relate material properties and behaviour to structural performance.
4. Train the students to work more efficiently as part of a group
Course Outcomes:
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Students will have the ability to describe and explain basic properties of the materials of construction
including the manufacturing process.
2. Students able to evaluate and recommend the best use of materials in a specific construction scenario.
3. Students will have the ability to solve problems related to materials and determine the suitable application
of materials in construction.
Delivery Method:
The course content may be presented through a blend of instructional methods, including lecture, group
discussion, assignment, teamwork and independent study.
Assessment:
Test 1 : 10%
Test 2 : 10%
Assignment 1 : 15%
Assignment 2 : 15%
Final Test : 50%
Attendance:
