Rough Essay:

Your phase III (rough essay) is simply your outline, expanded and written in full
sentences and paragraphs. When organizing your essay, please follow the outline closely.
Please note that you are allowed to deviate from your outline as you improve your
essay. With each phase of this project, your essay should grow and improve.

You have a WORD LIMIT of 1500 words (EXCLUDING your FRONT COVER
PAGE, REFERENCES, and your TOPIC JUSTIFICATION).

Please make sure to DOUBLE SPACE your ROUGH ESSAY, use TIMES NEW
ROMAN and FONT SIZE of 12. Use DEFAULT settings for your margins.

Grading Phase III (Rough Essay) will be graded out of 5 marks for completion, The
purpose of phase III is for you to IMPROVE your writing and paraphrasing in
preparation for the final phase of the project!

I. Introduction (several paragraphs):


Introduce broad topic; get the readers attention
Why is the topic important?
Lead into discussion of your thesis statement. Your thesis statement is a
restatement of your question.

II. Evidence for the yes side (several paragraphs):


Here you want to review your argumentation in SUPPORT for the YES
answer to your question and the supporting evidence.

III. Evidence for the no side (several paragraphs):


Here you want to review your argumentation that NEGATES your question
and the supporting evidence.

IV. Comparison of the yes vs. no evidence (few paragraphs):


Here you want to compare and contrast the QUALITY of the supporting
evidence in your yes and no arguments.

V. Conclusion (ONE paragraph):


State which side of the answer (yes vs. no) has the most evidence behind it
AND your RATIONALE (which is an amalgamation of your research!)

VI. References:
Note must be peer-reviewed references, in Nature style. You must have SIX
primary references.
References must be organized in order of APPEARANCE in the essay.
References should be shown in the essay as numerical exponents, in order.
VII. Topic Justification:
200-300 word limit, one-paragraph explanation of why you selected your
topic. Within your explanation, you must explain both why your topic matters
to you, and why the topic should matter to the general population. You may
write your topic justification in first person.

SUBMISSION REMINDERS:

You must submit your Phase III via TURNITIN to the folder of your Scientific
Literacy TA. Submission to the wrong folder will result in a 10% penalty.

You must upload your assignment as an ADODE/PDF document (.PDF) OR


WORD document (.doc or .docx). NO HTML or PAGES files will be accepted.
These submissions will receive a grade of ZERO!

Please make sure to save your file in the following format. Failure to follow file
formatting instructions will result in a 10% penalty:

FINE DETAILS your assignment should be in Times New Roman & 12 point
font. Your assignment should be NOW DOUBLED-SPACED.

REFERENCING You must PARAPHRASE. NO DIRECT quotations! You


must use in-text ordered exponents for your outline. For example: Lung cancer is
caused by smoking1. Where 1 refers to the first reference in your reference list.
Remember, you DO NOT alphabetize your references at the end, but order them
in terms of appearance in the outline/essay.
