Introduction

The word media comes from the Latin plural of medium. According to McLuhan
media is an extension of some human faculty-psychic or physical. The Wheel is
an extension of the foot, the book is an extension of the eye, clothing an extension
of the skin and electric circuitry is an extension of the central nervous system.

The term mass media makes reference to all the diversified collection of media
technologies that reach a large audience via mass communication. The
technologies through which this communication takes place include a variety of
outlets. As an introduction, they are:

1. Prints (books, pamphelts, newspapers, magazines, etc.) from the late 15th

century

2. Recordings (gramaphone records, magnetic records, magnetic tapes,

cassettes, cartridges, CDs and DVDs) from the late 19th century

3. Cinema from about 1900

4. Radio from about 1910

5. Television from about 1950

6. Internet from about 1990

7. Mobile phones from about 2000

Mass communication history is fairly short, although the various forms of mass
media that have developed over the years, mass media also has made a
tremnendous impression on the technological, political, economic, social and
cultural trends of every nation. Mass communication, defined as communication
reaching large numbers of people, primarly developed in just the last 500 years.
Earlier developments, along with technological advances and social change, they

helped to spark the demand and innovation necessary for creating todays mass
media.

Books are the oldest of the media, with the first known book written in Egypt
around 1400 B.C. Books were not reproduced for the masses, however, until the
invention of the printing press in 1456. Newspapers are otherwise considered to be
the oldest mass medium. News-sheets appeared as early as 100 B.C. in Rome
and as political tracts and pamphlets roughly 400 to 500 years ago. Nonetheless,
the first regular newspaper did not debut until the 1600s. Magazine development
was also slow. Derived from the French word magasin, the first English magazine
did not appear until 1704.

The electronic media developed more quickly. Radio emerged as a mass media in
the 1920s, thanks to the growing popularity of mass entertainment and
technological advances steeming from the development of the telegraph,
telephone and the wireless network. A worlwide race to add pictures then ensued,
with the creation of television considered stride in the 1940s, followed by cable
television and satellite communications in the latter half in the century. The newest
mass media has emerged to supplement and compete with the traditional media.
Trends have included specialization, globalization, consolidation and convergence.

Characteristics of Mass Media

Five characteristics of mass communication have been identified by

sociologist John Thompson of Cambridge University:

Comprises both technical and institutional methods of production and

distribution" - This is evident throughout the history of mass media, from
print to the Internet, each suitable for commercial utility

Involves the "commodification of symbolic forms" - as the production of

materials relies on its ability to manufacture and sell large quantities of the

work; how radio stations rely on their time sold to advertisements, so

newspapers rely on their space for the same reasons, too.

Separate contexts between the production and reception of information"

Its "reach to those 'far removed' in time and space, in comparison to the
producers"

Information distribution" - a "one to many" form of communication, whereby

products are mass-produced and disseminated to a great quantity of
audiences.

Purposes of Mass Media

Mass media encompasses much more than just news, although it is sometimes
misunderstood in this way. It can be used for various purposes:

Advocacy, both for business and social concerns. This can include
advertising, marketing, propaganda, public relations, and political
communication.

Entertainment, traditionally through performances of acting, music, sports,

and tv shows. Along with ligth reading; since the late 20th century, also
through video and computer games.

Public service announcements and emergency alerts (that can be used as

political device to communicate propaganda to the public).

The impact of mass media in Education

Media is everywhere; it has become a part of our daily life. The media plays a
dominant role in Education and the learning process. Media has potential to shape
personalities, change the way we perceive and understand the world and our
immediate reality. Media has enhanced education and education has improved
media. There are two major approaches to using media and technology in schools.
First, students can learn from media and technology, and second, they can learn

with media and technology. But mass media has disadvantages, too. What is the
role of media on education? Why people admire media while others curse media?

The positive and the negative impacts of media on Education

Mass media can be divided in three main types:

Print media: newspapers, magazines, books, etc

Electronic media: radio, television
Interactive media: computers, webites, cellphones, blogs, cinema,
videogames

The positive impacts will be developed firstly.

Print media: The role of print media in the process of education is of special
importance. Print media are the basic oldest channels of communication
between one source to other. Print media are being printed in every regional
language to facilitate the readers to get information and knowledge in ones
own mother tongue. Book is the best source of education. A lot of material of
formal and informal education is available in the books. Mostly students
depend upon this media to learn. In spite of modern technology, this
medium is still the most popular for the learning.

Electronic media:
Radio is also playing an important role in education: The radio is a
powerful mass media used in education for disseminating information,
imparting instruction and giving entertainment. It has the power to bring
the world to the classroom, and the class could be presented as
textbooks on the air.

Television: the television is a powerful media that reaches all sorts of

people. It is a source of informal education. TV plays an important role
in shaping peoples life, both professionally and personality. We have a
lot of programs on almost everything. There is something for everyone:

Discovery channel, National Geographic channel, Animal Planet, etc.

They provide us with a great amount of knowledge. TV helps us to
learn so many things like politics, business, nature, different languages
and cultures, etc.

Interactive media:
The internet has a significant potential for providing children and youth
with access to educational information, and can be compared with a
huge home library. Regardless of gender, age, geographic location,
language or any disability, internet gives an equal chance to all to
progress in the field of education. Online learning has assumed the
role of an important media for imparting distance education.

Mobile devices: they have changed the learning methods of students,

who store all their notes on mobiles and study from them because it is
easy and convenient. We can use them to look for some good online
books and read them. Some examples are: mobiles phones, tablets, i-
phones, etc.

Mass media is a very helpful tool in obtaining information in a fast way. But it has
many negative impacts on the students and their education. These impacts are:

Mass media makes students dull and lazy. Students lose their imagination
and the ability to think critically about education.
There is no in-depth learning and proper research. Students only copy and
paste information from websites without checking if it is right or wrong. They
do not do a proper research in books and magazines.
Mass media encourages mass learning without quality learning.
Teachers and students have become duplicator of Wikipedia. They lose their
skills to create their own thoughts and critics about some specific topic.
Mass media poisons the learners with various unethical or indecent contents
in print or video forms. Like sexual content, violence, bullying, etc
There is a connection between excessive Internet use and depression, drug
abuse, isolation, and suicide. Students do not rely on their parents anymore;

7

they look for easy ways to solve problems. They could imitate some things
they watch on some videos.
Students do not use the mass media in a correctly way, they only do these
to play or to waste their times, instead of looking for some information about
some interesting topic.

Conclusion
In conclusion, we can say that mass media is a very useful tool that
facilitates the search of information as well as the distribution of it. Mass
media must be used for education and educational institutes to promote it,
but it must be a guided used by the teachers and headmasters, so students
can get the best of mass media; without falling in the fallacy of wasting time,
for example, playing some game or surfing some social web sites like
facebook, twitter. Teachers are not the only responsible for guide students.
Parents have to collaborate with school, in creating in students good habits
like reading a book, reading some science magazine, etc; and not only the
use of the television to entertain students. A good idea is to encourage the
creation of more educational FM stations, to allow students to be the sender
of information to their community. This will give them a sense of pertenence
to their school and it will help them to develop social skills to know how to
support their beliefs and thoughts. Students must know how to use mass
media, also which are their advantages and disadvantages.
The media can be seen from different points of view. But it depends on how
we use it; it is there when it can be said whether it is useful for life, for a
future job or not. It is up to us to use mass media as a way to empower our
lifes or just use it to waste our valious time.
