Teaching and Learning with Technology has played such an incredible
role for students of all ages. Using computers in the classroom students are able
to explore every teaching and learning style that can help a student reach their
full potential with learning. Thee programs such as Math, Science, Typing, Art,
Social Studies, and on some websites a student can learn a different language.
Along with websites to help students learn about subjects they are having
trouble with there is also a wide variety of software students can learn to make
learning fun and more interactive. There are games like Where in the World is
Carmen Sandiego? Where students can learn world geography, diverse
cultures, landmarks, foreign languages, and history. Another program is Reader
Rabbit who helps students develop better writing skills, helps students read, and
increase/widen their vocabulary. There are other amazing websites that we use
like Duolingo that helps students learn a new language.
Duolingo is an incredible website that has helped students everywhere.
Even outside of school this website is for everyone. In the classroom I require my
students to learn and work one one foreign language. I give students the
opportunity to learn 1 out of 6 languages; Spanish, French, German, Italian,
Dutch, and Irish. Giving students the opportunity to learn a language of their
choice gives them a unique learning experience.
This website is extremely user friendly with a simple web design. The layout
gives the user the ease of picking what they would like to learn, for an example
we will be using French. Once you start the program, which is completely free,
you will begin with the first three modules. These modules are Basics 1, Basics
2 , and Phrases. In Phrases 1 we learn basic words like man, woman, girl, boy,
eat, drink, the, and, red, and orange. For phrases these terms will be; hello,
thank you, good morning, and good night. From there you will be able to learn
food, animals, adjectives, plurals, clothing, colors, questions, numbers, family,
time, and so many other things to increase their vocabulary in a foreign
language.
Having computers in a classroom benefits students greatly. At this day
and age more and more things have become more influenced and centered
around technology. For every class from first grade to college, teachers require
their students to use computers for at least one project. As time grows on and
technology progresses more of our teachers center their projects on computers,
word processing software, drawing programs, and especially the
software/websites available for computers. Not only computers as well, there
are tablets, phones, and television programs. All of these devices have been
integrated more every year changing our life and how we live it.
The School District standards have been exceeded by our students in this
program with the help of technology. They are able to type fluently and
accurately from getting practice with all of the typing programs we have on our
computers. Students have created and edited many word-processing
documents. Students know how to use a search engine effectively and what
website is a trustworthy source. Students have created multimedia documents
with graphics, text, and sound. Students have been able to save files in personal
folders and inside classroom folders. Students know and can explain the
differences between a network and a stand-alone computer system. Students
are able to explain each of the electronic devices and explain what their
function is in the classroom.
The Nevada Standards has played an important role in the development
of teachers skills for teaching at this school. Our teachers can create tables,
charts, and graphics to show how valuable their information gathered is.
Teachers have the typing speed of 40 words per minuet or higher. Our teachers
have detailed knowledge in word processing, spreadsheets, databases,
presentation software, and technology media. Teachers are able to generate
formulas and use functions to solve problems, demonstrate sorting and filtering
data, importing and exporting data, and implement security measures for
spreadsheet protection. Our teachers utilize data to create tables, create forms
to collect and enter data, utilize filters to answer inquiries and create final
reports, they can create, edit, revise collected data consistent with professional
standards, and use data to create mail merging with other software
applications. Teachers can also use a template to create a presentation, edit
and revise representation content consistent with professional standards, they
can effectively apply animations and transitions to customize presentations, and
demonstrate professional presentation skills. Finally our teachers can compare
and contrast security measures taken in various formats, evaluate internet
research for credibility and reliability, implement an electronic file storage
system, and explain the usage of social media platforms.
The National Standards increased the clarity of each project our students
have worked with. We focus on Creativity and innovation, communication and
collaboration, research and information fluency, critical thinking, problem
solving, and decision making, digital citizenship, and technology operations and
concepts. From grades K 12, teachers have ensured their students have
learned all of these things to ensure they are technology literate along with
exceeding in every subject. The standards found from the district and the nation
has developed our students to become the best they can be. Having teachers
focus on their state standards they become the model for their students on what
a proficient student will become, a teacher. With the knowledge given,
teachers ensure their students meet every standard and exceed them all.
Lesson Title: Read About Me
Grade Level Appropriateness: Kindergarten 5th grade
Technology Content Standard Addressed: NETS(S) #1: Students demonstrate
creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and
processes using technology. #3: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate,
and use information. #6: Students demonstrate a sound understanding of
technology concepts, systems, and operations. NETS(T) #1: Teachers use their
knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to
facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation
in both face-to-face and virtual environments. #2: Teachers design, develop,
and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating
contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and
to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the Student
Standards.
Other Content Standard Addressed: Art, music, dance, theater, history,
geography, English, reading or language arts, math, science, and world
languages.
Objective: Students will create a book about themselves. They will find pictures
on the internet of their favorite things, draw what their house looks like using tools
in Microsoft Word or Pages. Students will be able to type the question asked
along with their answer.
Materials Needed:
A computer with Internet access
A word processing program like Microsoft Word or Mac Pages.
Computer mouse (a trackpad can work but a mouse works the best)
A inch binder (you could also use a folder with clasps instead)
A 3 hole punch
White printer paper
(Optional) Washi or decorative tape to apply on the side of the students
pages. This is a very creative way to reinforce the holes punched in the
paper.
Suggested Group Size: This is an individual project
Procedures:
1. Before students come to class in the morning, turn on every computer in
the classroom and logging on. The username and password for each
student will be their student numbers, that list can be found in the blue
binder on my desk labeled Student Information.
2. After students have entered class and attendance has been taken pass
out the list of 40 questions to each student and have them highlight 20 of
them, the copies are in the green folder on my desk.
3. Directions for this lesson:
a. Highlight 20 questions on the Get to Know Me page handed out
right when class started.
b. Students must create a 20 page book filled with pictures and
drawings showing what some of their favorite things are.
c. Each page will contain one question and one answer. Example:
What is your favorite candy? My favorite candy is gummy bears. On
this page students will find images of gummy bears, save the image
onto the computers desktop and use that image on their page.
There can be a maximum of 5 pictures and a minimum of 1 per
page.
d. At the bottom of each page students will insert a textbox with the
question they highlighted and they will type out their answer under
the question.
e. Have students repeat this process for a total of 20 pages. Students
must have a total of 20 pages. There can be no less and no more
than 20.
4. After students have created their book, check to ensure there are 20
pages and a maximum of 5 pictures and a minimum pf 1.
5. Make sure students have written out their questions and their answer at
the bottom of the page.
6. When the student is done DO NOT LET THEM PRINT IT OUT THEMSELVES.
7. The teacher will verify everything is finished and press the print button
once waiting for the printing to be cone before going to another
students work.
8. After a students book is printed there should be 20 pages.
9. ** If there is decorative tape let the student pick the color or pattern and
the teacher must tape the left hand side where the holes will be punched
to insert them into the book. This step makes sure the pages will not rip out.
10. If there is no tape, proceed to punch holes in the paper clipping them to
their folder, if there are a class set of binders put the pages inside the 3
ringed binder. Last week students created their own title page with their
name, these can be found in the same folder where the question pages
were found.
11. Insert the name page on the front cover of the binder, if there is no cover
write the students name clearly at the center of the folder and let the
student draw on the folder.
Assessment: Students will be graded on their originality and if they were within
the guidelines. The directions were followed by the student, the students work is
neat, the student worked the whole time with no need to be reminded to stay
on task or to be reminded to stay focused on their work, the students used the
resource provided to them to ensure their information is correct and words are
spelled correctly, students used full sentences rather than an one word answer,
and students will demonstrate a well-developed command of standard English
grammar and proper spelling.
