TherehasbeenanumberofstudiesshowingthatAfricanAmericanyoutharemoreharshlydisciplinedatschoolthatchildrenofotherracialand
ethnicgroups.Forexample,seethisJBHEpostandalsothispost.Mostofthesestudiesfocusonschoolsuspensionsandexpulsions.

NewresearchauthoredbyBreaL.Perry,associateprofessorofsociologyatIndianaUniversity,andEdMorris,associateprofessorofsociologyattheUniversityof
Kentucky,offersnewdataontheracialdisciplinegapinregardstogenderforstudentswhoaresenttotheprincipalsofficefordisciplinaryreasons.Thestudyof
middleandhighschoolstudentsinalargeurbandistrict,foundthatBlacksgirlsarethreetimesaslikelyasWhitegirlstobesenttotheprincipalsoffice.The
authorsfoundthebiggestdisparitiesareforlowleveloffensessuchasdisobedience,disruptivebehavior,andinappropriatedress.

Dr.PerryobservesthatBlackgirlsaredisproportionatelyvulnerabletogettingofficereferralsfortheserelativelyminoroffenses.Thisisanareawheretheresalot
ofdiscretiononthepartofteachersorotherstaff.Theymayjustgiveawarning,ortheymaygiveareferral.

BlacksboysareonlytwiceaslikelyasWhiteboystobesenttotheprincipalsoffice.BlackgirlsaresenttotheprincipalatthesamerateasWhiteboys.Thegender
benefittheprotectiveroleofgenderiscompletelyerasedforBlackgirls,Dr.Perrynotes.
